Subject: update octave-nan and bug fix
Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2010 17:35:28 +0200
Package: octave-nan
Version: 1.0.9

Version 1.0.9 is really outdated and contains a bug.
e.g. https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/index.php?30905

The bug was fixed in Oct 2009, and several new releases of octave-nan
have been made.

I've uploaded a new release to Octave.sf.net:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave/files/Octave%20Forge%20Packages/Individual%20Package%20Releases/NaN-2.0.4.tar.gz/download
which was not picked up by debian.

The latest release of Octave-NaN is always available from here:
http://biosig-consulting.com/matlab/NaN/
http://biosig-consulting.com/matlab/NaN/nan-2.3.0.tar.gz

If there is anything I can do making it easier for debian to pick up the
latest release, please let me know.

Kind regards,
   Alois Schloegl

Thanks, I'll prepare an updated package.

We might need to update our debian/watch file to have it inform us of
new releases. Indeed, it looks like it's giving us 404 errors right
now. I'll look into it.

I see that the old version still shows up here:

     http://octave.sourceforge.net/nan/index.html

You might need to ping Søren Hauberg <soren@hauberg.org> to update
this page, as it's not completely automatically generated. Thomas
Weber <tweber@debian.org> has in fact updated this package's watch
file, but I don't see this update in a release. However, we depend on
the above link for determining the latest version of the NaN package.

Do you want us to point our watch file to that location and bypass the
Octave-Forge distribution? I would prefer not to, unless you think
your distribution method is irreconcilable with the 'Forge
distribution.

Hi Alois,

thanks for caring about your software in distributions.

Is there something more critical than this bug fixed? Debian is in
freeze right now, so getting a new version into the next stable version
is difficult, unless:
 - the change is small (which ususally rules out a new upstream release)
 - the bug is critical.

That's strange. I uploaded 1.0.9 at the end of december and I'm
reasonably sure that was the latest version I found at Sourceforge back
then.

Some information about 'watch' files: we use them to check upstream's
pages automatically for updates. In the case of NaN, Sourceforge still
lists 1.0.9 as the latest release.

If the above is a canonical place for the NaN package, that suffices.
However, right now an upload to Debian unstable (the normal development
version of Debian) is not possible, sorry.

I can upload it to Debian experimental, but Ubuntu will not pick this
up (I think).

v2.0.4 was uploaded, but the script generating nan/index.html did not
pick it up.

Now that I'm aware of the problem, I changed the watch file manually.

Now, that the watch-file at octave-forge is fixed, it's ok to use this.

The patch for 1.0.9 should go in immediately.

Concerning the latest release, I would appreciate if 2.3.0 would go into
experimental as fast as possible.

I've figured out a way to update this file myself.

The latest centralized release of octave-forge packages was done in Jun
2009(!!!).
I think Soren took over only after this date. Since then, packages were
released only in an individual basis.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave/files/Octave%20Forge%20Packages/Individual%20Package%20Releases/

The debian watch file
    http://dehs.alioth.debian.org/wwiz_detail.php?id=33493299&type=watch
contains this:

version=3
http://octave.sourceforge.net/packages.html \
    http://downloads\.sourceforge\.net/octave/nan-([\d.]+)\.tar\.gz\?download

However http://octave.sourceforge.net/packages.html yields a 404 error.
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/octave resolves to
http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave/files/
and http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave/files/nan-2.3.0.tar.gz
results in this error

The "/nan-2.3.0.tar.gz" file could not be found or is not
available. Please select another file.

Probably, this was caused by changes at directory structure of the
sourceforge release system.
Because of this changes at sourceforge, it seems that the debian watch
file might need some modification, as well.

I like to make it as simple as possible. This is currently not the case.
I'm trying to keep the following links updated, each need manual
interaction.
[1] https://mloss.org/software/view/206/
[2] http://biosig-consulting.com/matlab/NaN/
[3]
http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave/files/Octave%20Forge%20Packages/Individual%20Package%20Releases/

I would appreciate, if we can find a way to simplify this. What is your
suggestion for updating the debian octave-nan package with a smaller
turn-around time ?
Is there a way that I can trigger the generation of a new octave-nan
package (perhaps from the SVN-repository) for debian ?

Yes, we are aware of that. I did the latest upload round of octave-forge
related packages at the end of May 2010. Packages that had a new release
back then have working watch files.

Yes, the watch as currently used in DEHS (Debian External Health
Service) is broken. We have an updated version in our git repository
(which thinks that 1.0.9 is the latest release).

Yes, the watch file must be adapted.

The idea of watch files is to make it easier for both parties. So,
what's easiest for you?

Unless you somehow can give me more than 24 hours per day, I don't have
any suggestion.

You are free (and encouraged) to clone our git repository from
http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-octave/octave-nan.git
and publish packages yourself.
