Subject: Gcompris - segmentation fault on start
Date: Sat, 21 Aug 2010 18:43:27 +0200
Package: GCompris
Version: 9.3
Severity: grave

Debian/Squueze - Linux 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Sat Jul 24 02:27:10 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

Hi all,

when I try to run gcompris I get:

** Message: Binary relocation disabled

** (process:14556): WARNING **: exec_prefix NONE

(gcompris:14556): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_window_set_type_hint: assertion /
   `!gtk_widget_get_mapped (GTK_WIDGET (window))' failed
Segmentation fault

The previous versions (under the same system) runned smoothly but it is
not possible to downgrade now as downgrading would disrupt a few other
programs.

I put a strace of the program ('gc-str.zip') in my public space:

Thanks for any help.
Regards,
ennio

I have further info on the subject:
1. after instaling gstreamer0.10-alsa (which is not among the packages
gcompris depends on) the program will start running but goes in
   segfault as soon as one attempts any of the games;
2. starting the program with -m flag seems the only way to run it to some
   extent
Hope this helps.

I tried to reproduce this with gcompris version 9.3-1 in a freshly
installed kvm machine, and gcompris was able to start and run games
just fine. I tested the first mathematical game in the list (upper
left corner) showing pairs of dices.

Any idea how to reproduce your problem? Can you try to run 'valgrind
gcompris' to try to get a better idea why it crashes? The strace
output did not tell me much.

As I am unable to reproduce the problem, I suspect the severity should
be lowered from grave to important.

Happy hacking,

I can't reproduce this on my up-to-date squeeze system (with custom
2.6.36-rc4 kernel, i686). I also tried uninstalling gstreamer-alsa,
still works. I do see all the warnings before the segmentation fault,
but not the fault itself. What soundcard do you have (Intel
82801DB/DBL/DBM here)? Are there sound issues with other programs?

Cheers,

   Wolfram

Hi Petter,

thanks for your message.

No objection to lower the severity from grave to important as it seems
I'm the only one experiencing this problem (that, as I said in my
previous message, disappears running gcompris without 'music').

I downloaded 'valgrind' and saved the output of 'valgrid gcompris' run
with different options: only when I disabled sound I could go through
the different games, otherwise the program would exit either after the
first click on any icon or when I clicked the configuration icon.

As I'm not able to interpret them, a compressed copy of the files is
enclosed for your perusal.
In case I could be of any further help, please do not hesitate to tell
me.

Best regards,
    ennio

severity 593869 important
thanks

I couldn't reproduce it either, including with gstreamer0.10-alsa installer,
thus lowering the priority.

Subject: Gcompris dies when selecting a game
Date: Mon, 12 Dec 2011 15:59:10 -0500
I have this same problem. I've been working around it for a year by
using the -m option and turning off the music, buy my youngest
grand-daughter is now ready to start playing and needs the audio.

I'm running gcompris 9.6.1 on Oneiric right now with Lubuntu and LXDE.
My machine is an APTIVA but it has been more than reliable until this
point. It only has 384KB of RAM, but it's able to run choppy
streaming video if we care to watch.

Sound card is ESS Technology ESS1969 Solo-1 Audiodrive (rev 01).

Anything else I can add?

Thanks
