Subject: Hang on Resuming from hibernation with Plymouth
Date: Sat, 21 Aug 2010 03:51:38 +0430
Package: plymouth
Version: 0.8.3-5

Plymouth causes hang on resuming from hibernation with uswsusp (splash =
n). When I press Esc just after Plymouth's start, I can even see the
message "resume image loaded successfully", but the system locks up.

Without Plymouth, resuming is OK.

This is very similar to #585704 (archived).

problem is not in plymouth, but in the kernel, reassigning.

Or perhaps, the problem is in uswsusp?

I uninstalled uswsusp and used the default hibernation mechanism with
Plymouth successfully. But the advantage of uswsusp is that it always
frees swap after resuming, while, in the case of the default mechanism,
swap isn't freed after several hibernations, so that the system is
somewhat slow immediately after resuming.

TuxOnIce (with the same, Squeeze kernel) doesn't have any problem with
Plymouth either.

  Hello:

According to reporters and bug reports this one looks a dupe of #620145. Could
you please consider reassigning to uswusp package and merging this one (#593795)
with #620145?

  Thanks and regards,

with a reproduction recipe for this that doesn't involve uswsusp,
please don't hesitate to reassign back.

  Hello all:

I've found out some upstream bugs that lead me to promising results so far,
although I'll need some more testing to make sure this is the correct fix.

  Basically, I've followed this bug:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40241

The outcome patch[0] was only recently applied to linux kernel on 3.3.1 and I
think also on 3.2.14, neither of those are in Debian AFAIK.

In my case, I proceeded without uswsusp, I kept plymouth though. Yes, I
thought this was a kernel bug from the begginning, just that I had no time to
show it off. This scenario hasn't been the same as the one that originally
brought me here, since I've been trying to go for a simple testcase. Anyway, I
got the hang then with both custom build 3.2.13 and also with stock 3.3 (from
experimental) by then I was using uswsusp. I always use plymouth.

I first managed to reproduce a crash with a custom build 3.2.13. Then I applied
the patch[0] and so far I've been unable to reproduce the hang. I'm going now
into building a "stock" experimental kernel, with the patch applied, but I guess
the same results could come with a 3.3.1.

Hi,

I will take a look soon about this problem. Probably I need to create the inteface between suspend-utils and plymouth.
I am working now in a new package version of uswsusp and I will try to include this new feature.

Thanks for your report.

  Hello:

In this time I conducted several more tests since now I'm running a Debian
kernel, exactly experimental 3.3.2.

It's likely confirmed that the patch I tested was the fix for the hang problem.
This is probably already addressed as [0] which is part of this bug.

[0] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=645547

Once that is fixed, plymouth is not working fully right. Everytime I try to
resume things goes as expected until some little time after I'm asked for the
cryptroot password. At this point plymouth freezes and I got that I can alt-
sysrq-K to kill it and resume with the resuming. Fortunately I unmasked that
sysrq feature that is masked in default Debian kernels.

After I do this I get the "Returning to userspace" message and resume ends up
succesfully.

I haven't test without uswsusp package.

As a conclusion I'd say that the interface between uswsusp and plymouth is not
working very well, but I'm not sure if such thing exist. I'd also say that if
this freeze is fixed, this bug (and those merged) can be considered solved.

  HTH, best regards,

Hi,
your bug has been filed against the "linux-2.6" source package and was filed for
a kernel older than the recently released Debian 7.0 / Wheezy with a severity
less than important.

We don't have the ressources to reproduce the complete backlog of all older kernel
bugs, so we're closing this bug for now. If you can reproduce the bug with Debian Wheezy
or a more recent kernel from testing or unstable, please reopen the bug by sending
a mail to control@bugs.debian.org with the following three commands included in the
mail:

reopen BUGNUMBER
reassign BUGNUMBER src:linux
thanks

Cheers,
