Subject: udev - system hangs at login screen
Date: Sun, 15 Aug 2010 16:18:00 +0530
Package: udev
Version: 160-1
Severity: critical
Tags: squeeze sid

Reproduce bug:
Upgrade udev to 160-1, reboot.
During booting, you will get errors saying "udeverror- udev already running"
acpi_fakekeyd will also not run with an error message.
At the login screen, mouse, keyboard will not work.
If you remove and re-insert usb mouse - mouse will work again but not
laptop keyboard
(have not tried with usb keyboard).

Solution:
Boot into single user mode -
cd /etc/rc2.d/
mv S02udev K02udev
cd /etc/rc3.d/
mv S02udev K02udev
init 6
Works fine except for some acpi problems (will file another bug report for that)

This cannot happen in normal conditions.
I believe your initramfs is broken in some way, what happens if you
force rebuilding it?

This is not a solution, you broke your system worse.

I simply upgraded my kernel version, headers and all to the one currently in
unstable (2.6.32+28).
cd /etc/rc2.d/
mv K02udev S02udev
cd /etc/rc3.d/
mv K02udev S02udev

Again got the error: "Starting hotplug events dispatcher: udeverror..." and
unable to log in.

This solution seems to keep my system running fine.
Any other suggestions?

This is not what I asked you. See update-initramfs(8) for details.

> Any other suggestions?
Rebuild the initramfs. If it still does not work then run its scripts
step by step as explained in the man page to find out why udevd is not
being killed when it should be.
But I am quite sure that you broke your system in some way.

First I tried sudo update-initramfs -u
Then, sudo update-initramfs -d -k all
and sudo update-initramfs -c 2.6.32-5-amd64

I am supposed to run

This is documented in initramfs-tools(8).
udevd is supposed to be killed by
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-bottom/udev .

I ran the script by hand but could not find udev being killed.
Looked through the INITRAMFS-TOOLS(8) man page. Other than the ps tool is
there any other way to track the status of udev? Am I missing something?
Thanks.

I also experienced this bug. I am running Squeeze, and on performing a
safe-upgrade I experienced exactly the same symptoms. I managed to get
a working system by following the suggested workaround (suggested by OP
that is).

I asked for help in Debian help forums and had no reply, asked on
Linuxquestions, no reply. Eventually I tried the suggestion to update
initramfs, but obviously did something wrong and ended up with a
completely unbootable system.

I had to wipe it and reinstall in the end. Sorry can't provide more
details but I don't have the time to try to reproduce it. It is a
nasty bug though clearly so I thought I should at least register my
experience.

Regards

Hi, yesterday (23/Nov) I upgraded my squeeze install
and experienced the same problem. The system hangs at
the login screen.
I noticed udev complains of having been started twice, and
in fact there were two identical S02udev scripts, one in
rcS.d and the other in rc2.d.
Removing the one in rc2.d solves the problem.
best regards,
rodrigo.

Indeed, I missed from the original bug report that the submitter renamed
the rc2.d script, not the rcS.d one.
The underlying problem is: what could cause a S02udev symlink to appear
in rc2.d? udev never requested this, ever.
Could this have been caused by a update-rc.d bug?

As I understand, this bug was experienced by multiple users who upgraded
from squeeze to squeeze so it justifies the original severity.

I have no idea.

Never seen anything like that with all my testing and use of
update-rc.d.

It do not happen when I test upgrades from lenny to squeeze, at
least. :)

It seems that this bug is still not understood, and not readily
reproducible, so I don't think we should delay squeeze for it. If/when
a fix becomes available it can still be considered, either before the
release or for a point update.

A fresh install of squeeze does not display the problem (udev 164-3).
I suggest that the work-around be put into the documentation section
related to Lenny->Squeeze upgrade.

Hello,
I might have just found the cause of this problem, at least in my case.
I had a fresh install of Squeezy, and I needed to add an udev rule.
Exploring the distro, I found in Gnome's menu

System -> Administration -> Services

that udev was unchecked. I thought I needed to enable it there (and
that if I didn't it would just blow up everything right then). It didn't give
any problem until now.

Right today I've installed VirtualBox (from their official repo), which
required to install (I didn't have none of these installed):

binutils
cpp-4.3
dkms
fakeroot
gcc
gcc-4.3
gcc-4.3-base
gcc-4.4
libc-dev-bin
libc6-dev
libqt4-opengl
libsdl-ttf2.0-0
linux-headers-2.6-amd64
linux-headers-2.6.32-5-amd64
linux-headers-2.6.32-5-common
linux-kbuild-2.6.32
linux-libc-dev
make
manpages-dev

On the following reboot the problem came up. Uninstalling the above packages
didn't help, but unchecking System -> Administration -> Services -> udev
also removed the error message at the boot.

ciao,
Andrea

Hello,
I have a Linux Mint Debian using debian testing. I have one problem
which (I think) is the same as it comes from the same packages.

After a random time, my keyboard freeze and I am just able to move my
mouse and leftclick. It was removed when I downgraded from 166-1 to
163-4 for udev, libudev0, libgudev0. I just can reboot and the duration
is really random : it can be just after login (automatical login), after
5 minutes or an hour.

An important thing is that, at the moment when it freeze, I see nothing
in /var/log/messages and in /var/log/syslog.

Good luck for fixing it,

Charles

This bug has hit me twice in the last month. I'm using Sid, and after a
dist-upgrade I can't boot normally. The system hangs at the login
screen, and the trackpad and keyboard are completely unresponsive. I
have to hold the power button to shut down, and I've found that I can
boot to a recovery console, log in, run "shutdown now", and when
prompted, enter Ctrl-D and then get a normal login. Removing S04udev
from /etc/rc2.d seems to fix the problem, and allows a normal boot.
Udev is unchecked in System/Administration/Services on my system. It
doesn't happen after every update, just now and then, and I'm not
certain udev has been updated when it hits, I simply haven't paid enough
attention to that. I'll try to document the bug better when it hits again.

Hello,

I am also concerned by this bug on my AMD64 under SID . The login is
freezed but I still have a ssh access from another machine on my home
network, very usefull !

I red a message on console very early at initial boot :

udevd(51]: error: runtime directory '/run/udev' not writable, for now
falling back to '/dev/.udev'

udevd[152] exec of program 'net.agent' failed

udevd[202]: exec of program 'cdrom_id --export /dev/sr0' failed

udevd[210]: exec of program 'cdrom_id --export /dev/sr0' failed

...

Starting the hotplug events dispatcher udevdudevd[320] error: runtime
directory '/run/udev' not writable, for now falling back to '/dev/.udev'
/lib/udev/write_dev__çroot_rule: line 17: /run/udev/root-link-rule:
Read-only file system

(I wrote by hand reading the monitor so I hope I didn't make important
mistakes).

The bug is perhaps related to /run directory. I think I gave the initial
problem : maybe the fallback to /dev/.udev is not activated in other
parts of the udev process.

I hope it will help, I keep an eye on the bug if further precision is
needed but the bug is on my home PC so I can only work on it in the
evening...

Regards

Jean-Louis

rm -rf /run and reboot. This is not a bug.

Same problem here: Debian Wheezy, with a fresh install (netinstall with a
minimal Gnome selection) on two different machines (a laptop and a virtual
machine on a different laptop) keyboard works in the shell, but I can't go
ahead the login screen, as both touchpad and keyboard doesn't response. If I
plug an external usb mouse (and keyboard I suppose) this start working for
the current session. None of the suggested fixes found around have worked
for me.
I don't know if this can help, but I can't find any file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
This bug is preventing me from using Debian, as I can't have always external
mouse or keyboard on a laptop. Any suggestion? Any workaround?

Thanks, regards

Simon

So now we know that this issue is not related to lenny->squeeze

Hello,

i had the same trouble with my laptop. no keyb. no more at gdm login.
how it came i do not know.
from marking udev in the admin/services.. perhaps
from installing libvirt .. probably..
see:
http://debian.2.n7.nabble.com/help-with-keyboard-lost-at-GDM-login-tt2803000.html#a2806270

i could reolve the problem by deleting S03udev in /etc/rc2.d

i can provide my log files
if you tell me what to do..
