Subject: qemu-system: PXE boot unstable using etherboot
Date: Fri, 6 Aug 2010 08:26:45 -0700
Package: qemu-system
Version: 0.12.5+dfsg-1
Severity: important

qemu 0.12.x isn't working well with with etherboot, at least for me.

it seems to probe the NIC twice, and on the second time, it seems to at least
partially work, able to load pxelinux over the network. (this aspect of the
problem seems identical to http://bugs.debian.org/585170)

but then, after loading pxelinux, it seems to sometimes hang qemu (screen goes
black, unable to switch to qemu monitor), and if it doesn't, it takes very long
to boot. if it does boot, sometimes the network card stops working, hanging the
root filesystem with nfsroot.

upstream has switched to gPXE, which has not yet been uploaded to debian, as
there are some outstanding licensing issues. http://bugs.debian.org/474034

Ditto for qemu-kvm, see

Ditto for qemu-kvm, see #585170 .

I asked on qemu-deve list (and someone CC'd etherboot), but no
answer come from that direction except of switching to discussing
gpxe licensing again...

it seems to be an incompatibility with pxelinux from syslinux-common. i tested
versions 2:3.71+dfsg-5 (in lenny) and 3.86+dfsg-5 (from snapshot.debian.org),
which both seemed to work.

the problem seems to have been introduced in syslinux-common 4.00~pre53+dfsg-1.
also tested with 4.00+dfsg-1 and 2:4.02+dfsg-3.

i tried with qemu 0.9.1-10lenny1 and it actually seemed to network boot fine
with pxelinux (except for the default network card, ne2k_pci).

since that version doesn't support kvm, i tried qemu 0.12.x with kvm support
disabled, and that seemed to also work.

so specifically, it appears to be a problem with the interaction of newer
versions (4.x) of syslinux/pxelinux and qemu with kvm support enabled.

wheee.

could you please ask this on syslinux@zytor.com? as you know, i'm away
for the next three weeks and can't handle it myself before that.

it seems versions of pxelinux 4.00 and later hangs qemu (0.12.x, 0.13.x) when
network booting using etherboot or gPXE and qemu's kvm support is enabled.

pxelinux 3.86 and earlier do not appear to trigger the problem. i also didn't
experience the problem with qemu-kvm (formerly known as kvm). qemu without kvm
support enabled also seems to work fine.

for some time now, qemu uses iPXE, and it seems to be working fine.

syslinux also appears to have fixed the problem a while back:

 syslinux (2:4.03+dfsg-7) experimental; urgency=low
 .

with qemu, thanks to Gene Cumm <gene.cumm@gmail.com> (Closes:
