[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: festival
Version: 1:2.0.95~beta-1
Severity: wishlist
Justification: nitech voices not packaged in Debian

I was using 1.96~beta-10 (and earlier versions) quite happily with the
attached PPA for nitech's ARCTIC/HTS-based awb voice.

Unfortunately, after upgrading festival, I get

Error: HTS_Model_load_pdf: Failed to load header of pdfs.

References to this error on the hts-users list suggest it's because
the HTS API changed and that, where the old festival accepted 2.1
voices, the new version only accepts 2.1.1 voices.

Unfortunately, there are no pre-compiled festvox packages for 2.1.1 at
http://hts.sp.nitech.ac.jp/archives/ and I can't work out how to
generate them.

I don't expect there's much you, the Debian festival maintainer, can
do about this. I'm filing it anyway so that there'll be a record next
time someone (e.g. me, in the future) upgrades festival and breaks
their HTS voices.

Since, you attached packaged version of it - if you're ready to become
maintainer of it for Debian - I'll be happy to sponsor the package!

I'll happily maintain official packages for the nitech/arctic/hts
voices in Debian, if someone can explain how to get them working with
Debian's new version of festival -- that is, how to build the 2.1.1
versions :-(

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Dear Trent Buck and Festival users in Debian and Ubuntu,

I have applied a commit to the git repository for Debian festival, currently
located at:

anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=tts/festival.git

The patch provides a compatibility module (known as hts21_engine) to allow
festival 2.1 to use older HTS 2.1 voices such as the very popular nitech
voices.
The patch must be compiled into festival.
To use the older voices a very slight change of two lines must be made to
the voice.
These lines are in a file in the festvox directory of the voice but
the name of the file changes from voice to voice. The lines to be replaced
are the following:

  (require 'hts)

must be replaced with:

  (require 'hts21compat)

and the line:

  (Parameter.set 'Synth_Method 'HTS)

must be replaced with:

  (Parameter.set 'Synth_Method 'HTS21)

Please note the compatibility module is intended to operate separately
and in parallel with the modern HTS engine known as "hts_engine".
There is no need to modify newer HTS 2.1.1 voices. They use "hts_engine".
We recommend that users move to newer voices when available as the
"hts21_engine" may not be ported to future releases in Debian of festival.

The git repository will be pushed to unstable and thence testing whenever
the usual
upload occurs.
In the meantime feel free to compile and build the package directly from our
source
git repository.

This compatibility module can in principle be applied to Debian squeeze
and/or released
versions of Ubuntu with appropriate compiling. Please contact me if you wish
to do this.

with the very best of regards,
Peter

I can confirm this work with my favourite vox, with this change to the
vox setup. Thanks, Peter!

Thanks very much for the lintian cleanups. They have been applied to the
git repository.

I am also a fan of the awb voice which incidentally is the primary author
of festival.
The fact that I am Australian probably accounts for this bias.

I include the following clarification for users viewing BTS:
You used three lines of changes to vox setup.
I suggested only two lines are essential to modify since I deliberately
hardcoded (require_module 'hts21_engine) hidden inside hts21compat.scm.
My reason for this was to minimize the difficulties of changing vox setup
for non-programmers. Either way will work. The two line method
contains a unnecessary "require" at the price of one less line to modify.
Three line modification is more elegant. Users should feel free to use
whatever suits them best.

best regards,
Peter

Attached is the source package I originally submitted, with the
trivial patch necessary to make work with Debian's festival 2.x.

When changing laptop I was building from the earlier attachment and
getting confused; hopefully this post will avoid that next time.

Attached is AWB's voice, patched as described downthread.

I'm sending this because each time I get a new laptop, I go pull the
dsc from this ticket, get the error above and go "huh? This is fixed
isn't it?" before remembering I have to patch the vox as well as get a
recent festival deb. Hopefully this will save me that confusion next
time. :-)
