Package: nvidia-kernel-dkms
Version: 195.36.24-4
Severity: normal
On fresh squeeze, installing nvidia-kernel via module-assistant triggers the following:
The following extra packages will be installed:
autopoint cvs debhelper diffstat dkms gettext html2text intltool-debian libcroco3
libfile-copy-recursive-perl libmail-sendmail-perl libsys-hostname-long-perl libvdpau1
lsb-release nvidia-glx nvidia-kernel-common nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-vdpau-driver
po-debconf python-support quilt update-inetd
Suggested packages:
dh-make gettext-doc lsb nvidia-settings libmail-box-perl procmail graphviz
Recommended packages:

The following NEW packages will be installed:

nvidia-vdpau-driver po-debconf python-support quilt update-inetd
-> Note that lsb-release was not yet installed
Later on configure:

Then lsb-release is being configured, and then works.
I think nvidia-kernel-dkms is using lsb-release too soon. It should pre-depends on it.

thanks
Reassigning the bug to dkms. nvidia-kernel-dkms does nothing special
with dkms, the postinst script was generated by dh_dkms.
I could reproduce this with other *-dkms packages, too.
dkms recommends lsb-release, but this does not imply that lsb-release is
configured before dkms (or anything depending on dkms).

policy 3.5:
You should not specify a `Pre-Depends' entry for a package before this
has been discussed on the `debian-devel' mailing list and a consensus
about doing that has been reached.
Did you do that?
Cheers,
Julien

No I didn't, I'm doing that now.
dkms needs lsb-release in Pre-Depends, otherwise if lsb-release is
unpacked but not yet configured, dkms modules can fail to install with
the following error:
(#589308)
Setting up nvidia-kernel-dkms (195.36.24-4) ...

Any objections to add the Pre-Depends entry?

This looks to me like a missing dependency on lsb-release in
nvidia-kernel-dkms, not in dkms. And I don't understand why a
Pre-Depends would be necessary anywhere. Care to explain?

nvidia-kernel-dkms postint runs /usr/lib/dkms/common.postinst (added by
dh_dkms) so imho this is not a missing dependency in nvidia-kernel-dkms.
Anyway you are right, I was under the impression that lsb-release was
used in preinst, and not in postinst. So a Depends entry is sufficient,
I will fix that soon.
Cheers.
Giuseppe.

The postinst for nvidia-kernel-dkms invokes dkms, which invokes
lsb_release. lsb_release hasn't been configured at this point so its
module has not been installed for the default Python version. But I
agree that there is no need for Pre-Depends.
I also wonder whether a distribution package of dkms really needs to use
lsb_release at all.
