I find a similar oops very reliably whenever there is moderate network
traffic, like updating squeeze. This happens on 2.6.32-3-686,
2.6.32-5-686, and 2.6.33-2-686 from experimental, but not at all on the
earlier squeeze kernel 2.6.30-2-686. Soon after this the system locks up
completely.

This makes the b43 driver in the current kernels more or less unusable
for me.

My problem seems related to those in Ubuntu report #533335
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/533335>. If I
unload the 3c59x module, I can no longer reproduce this problem, and
wireless is stable. With the 3c59x module loaded, b43 wireless is
essentially unusable, since the machine will reliably lock up.

I've attached two patches which together may fix this problem, but they
involve quite major changes to the driver. I do not have any hardware
of this type which I could use to test them.

Please could you follow the instructions at
<http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-common-tasks.html#s-common-official>
to build a package with these changes included, then test whether these
changes fix the problem for you and keep the wired network card working.

Ben.

Indeed, I can no longer reproduce the problem with these patches
applied. Both wired (3c59x) and wireless (b43) can now handle GB
transfers, which is about 100x more than was typically needed to trigger
  the problem for wireless.

I now question my judgement in reporting my problem on an existing bug
report, as the resolution does not fit the original reporter's
description (no 3c59x module loaded).

Since that section is very explicit in mentioning dependencies, may I
point out that the "test-patches" script relies on commands ("dch" at
least) from the "devscripts" package.

I believe that this changes in 3c59x made my squeeze sytem unusuable
since yesterdays upgrade from 2.6.32.5-15 to -18. I use a 3com card with
this driver for years, and after booting the new kernel my system
completely freezed reproducable after seconds online on the net.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to find the deb of -15 anymore, and I got
the same problen with another 3com card, so I had to
change the network card to a DLink model and now everything workes fine.

There were absolutely nothing in the logs, machine feezed completely, no
keyboard response, so no SysReq worked, only power button saved me.

Regards
Jens

Sorry about this. I'm trying to borrow one of these cards so I can
debug this.

What is the exact model you have (use "lspci -nn -d 10b7:")?

Also can you try enabling some debug logging:

rmmod 3c59x
modprobe 3c59x debug=3

Then run dmesg to get the logged messages, and send them back.

Okay, I can do this tomorrow, have to change the cards back first. I
hope that the debug output occurs in the syslog, as I said, the system
freezed complete immediately.
