This patch is actually just a stepping stone to getting the desired functionality
into ssh, but I'm starting here in case peoploe still use telnet.
On high latency, congested networks, it's advantageous to do as much character
processing as possible on the local client, and only send complete lines of input
to the remote server. Up till now the Linux kernel has lacked the features needed
for full support of the RFC1184 Telnet LineMode option, but I've posted a patch
to implement the missing kernel features.
http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=127625158418585&w=2
The patches here are needed to make telnet and telnetd compile and run properly
when building with -DLINEMODE instead of -DKLUDGELINEMODE.

Hi Howard,
Thanks for the patch. I have to do some heavy maintenance on the package
and once that's ready I'll include your patch.
Regards,
Alberto

Great, thanks. No rush though, these patches are useless until the kernel
patches go in.

The kernel interface has changed a little bit relative to the BSD-ish behavior
in the last patch.
http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/6/18/281
No data accompanies the TIOCPKT_IOCTL flag any more; this makes its behavior
more in line with the other TIOCKPKT_* flags and decouples the application
layer from the kernel-specific termios layout.
I've attached an updated telnet / telnetd diff to handle this change (note
that it actually simplifies the code compared to the original BSD behavior).
And just to repeat, these telnet patches are useless without the kernel
patches. Corresponding glibc patches will also be needed to expose the new
ioctl bits too.

It's been quite a while and this patch is being discussed again on the
Linux-kernel mailing list. Fyi, it still applies cleanly to current
netkit source. Please merge it, thanks.

thanks
The suggested patch is applicable with some fuzz,
but the resulting client is really not able to use
linemode since it still sends every single character
to the server, not complete lines as intended.
Further arguments as to the sense of these suggested
changes are needed before really closing in on an
improved package source.
