Hello,
my Live Debian OS uses the configure option of the X program to create a basic
xorg.conf file and after sets some values in this file,
the command fails when loading the vmware driver, in i386 architecture and
amd64 also,
X -configure -nolisten tcp
vmware: Please ignore above "FATAL: Module vmwgfx not found."

I had the same problem in several debian installations.
Xorg -configure works if you uninstall xserver-xorg-video-vmware
package.

I confirm the issue on my newly configured Debian squeeze box.
Since there is a workaround (uninstall xserver-xorg-video-vmware)
it probably is okay to leave this at normal severity level, but
the unimpeded use of X --configure is quite important these days to
obtain the core of a useful X configuration for a vastly changed X
configuration landscape. Therefore, if the workaround were not
available I would have requested classifying this bug at a much
higher severity level.
