Many people use TrueCrypt believing that it's FOSS, but although the
source code is available, it's development is kept secret and it isn't
considered Free Software by the FSF nor Open Source by the OSI.
ScramDisk for Linux (SD4L) is a great OTFE alternative that also
supports TrueCrypt containers.

The last upstream release was published in 2011.

Besides, cryptsetup now supports the TrueCrypt on-disk format,
so perhaps a better course of action would be to use this from the
desktop GUI's, which probably starts with adding such support to
udisks: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70164

Cheers,
