Package: libglib2.0-0
Version: 2.22.4-1
Severity: normal

Upgrading from libglib2.0-0 2.18.4-2 to libglib2.0-0 2.22.4-1 causes
gtk file pickers in
all gtk applications to take a very very long time to appear (15-30
seconds). I have confirmed that
downgrading causes them to be fast again.

There is no CPU, network or disk activity during this time. It just
seems to not be doing anything.

I can reproduce this behaviour in all GTK applications I have tried,
including Firefox, GIMP, and
qalculate. I attached to qalculate using gdb while it was waiting and
I got the following backtrace:

If anyone can tell me what package I need to install in order to get
libdbus-1.so.3 debugging
symbols and make the stack trace more useful, I would be glad to do
it. I already installed
libdbus-glib-1-2-dbg but it didn't help.

Please note: this behaviour happens only once, after the computer has
freshly booted. Subsequent
opening of the file picker is fast in applications.

This is a "debian testing" system running kde4 as the main desktop environment.

Thanks,
Alexander

Can you try GLib 2.24?

Also, I tested 2.20 and it was fine. So the problem happened somewhere
in between 2.20 and 2.22.

There are some 2.21 packages on http://snapshot.debian.org/package/glib2.0/ if
you want to test them.

Hi,

The problem exists in 2.21.6-1.

Any other packages of interest I should test?

Thanks,
Alexander

As 2.21 was a development series, there were more
changes then bugfixes between the various 2.21.X
releases.

P.S.: No top-posting please.

Hey.

I noticed that restarting dbus (sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart) allowed
me to get back to the state where the file picker will hang. This
allowed me to test much faster.

So here is an interesting development. While testing one of the
versions, I noticed that when I ran the filepicker, I got the
following error message:

(qalculate:4825): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: invoking
IsSupported() failed for remote volume monitor with dbus name
org.gtk.Private.GduVolumeMonitor:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildSignaled: Process
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor received signal 6

I looked up that file and determined that it's in the 'gvfs' package.
Clearly, my downgraded glib was too old for my shiny new gvfs, so this
caused problems. I downgraded gvfs. Surprise! The problem went away.
With an old version of gvfs, it works for ALL GLIBS, even the newest
(2.24).

I tested gvfs and determined that gvfs 1.4.0-2 is the last good
version, and 1.4.0-2+gdu1 is the first bad version.

The new version of gvfs works fine only for older glibs, and the old
version of gvfs works fine for all glibs.

Weird, huh? What's gdu?

So what's my next step?

Thanks,
Alexander

Hey, everyone;

Any news? Is libglib the right place for this bug or should it be
reassigned to gvfs? What should I be doing next?

Thanks,
Alexander
