Cool! I'll be happy to co-maintain the etherpad work. I glanced through the
issues yesterday but missed the package related issue.

I have asked Debian Java Packaging Team[0] about the best way to proceed. They
confirmed my suspicion that the way to go is to first get clean source packages
for the unpackaged jars.

Yesterday I assembled a list of jars and their status, see below.

Next step is to package necessary jars and then try to build etherpad, and
possibly separate appjet, packages.

My plan is to clone the etherpad github repository[1] and work on that.

Hi,

Is there a preliminary package somewhere ? I found
http://github.com/ether/pad/tree/master/debian/ but I'm not sure if it
is related to this ITP.

Hi,

I've build the package from the source I got at
http://github.com/ether/pad/ (using the debian folder provided), I've
just patched it to use java-6-openjdk instead of java-6-sun (as I
described it here
http://forge.bearstech.com/trac/wiki/EtherpadOpenJDK ) and it works.

I think I'll put the finishing touches to the package before the end of
the week, and then, maybe Loic Dachary could check it and upload it.

By the way, what do you think about a version of etherpad that would use
openjdk instead of java-sun ?

Cheers,
Valentin.

Hello,

I'm sorry I'm not working on this package anymore. I think it was too
complicated for my first packaging, what's more I don't have much time to
spend on it at the moment.
A version of my package can be found in http://deb.bearstech.com/etherpad/
but it doesn't fit the Debian rules for packaging.

Hi,

This is an automatic email to change the status of etherpad back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 6 months.

If you are still interested in adopting etherpad, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

retitle 576998 ITP: etherpad -- web based collaborative real-time editor

 thanks

However, it is not recommended to keep ITP for a long time without acting on
the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from
packaging that software. It is also a good idea to document your progress on
this ITP from time to time, by mailing <576998@bugs.debian.org>.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,

There is a new version out that we should probably package instead of
the full version.

http://etherpad.org/2011/08/22/major-release-etherpad-lite-v1/

That version is smaller, has a lower memory footprint and less
dependencies. It just looks aaaaawesome. :)

Has some packaging of etherpad-lite already been done?

I'm also interested in etherpad-lite and wondered if I have to start from
scratch. I'm successfully running etherpad-lite from its git source for a while
now and packaging shouldn't be too hard?

cheers, josch

I have started packaging the enormous list of dependencies for etherpad-lite. You cannot use npm in Debian, so every npm package must be built as .deb package.

All node-* and *.js found on my QA page [1] are related to the packaging of etherpad-lite. And there are many a more

[1] http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=mike.gabriel%40das-netzwerkteam.de

So what you can do is: join pkg-javascript-devel on lists.alioth.debian.org and peer into #debian-js IRC, so that we can coordinate the dependency packaging. (/me is sunweaver on IRC).

Greets,
Mike

Hi. It would be great to provide Ethernet in the Freedombox,
especially if it is included in Debian. Do you have any estimate on
when etherpad-lite might show up in Debian?

the packaging is on its way, though stalling from time to time.
Etherpad-lite requires many node-* and libjs-* packages as
dependencies. If you look at the Javascript packages on my qa page
[1], you may get an impression. And we are maybe half through with the
dependency packaging...
