Hi,

Does WebKitGtk support Java now? The bug tracking this[1] has been
closed, but it doesn't seem to be working for me.

None of the demo applets[2] I tried in Epiphany 2.29.92 works. There's
no visible error message, but the following appears in the source of
the page:

    <applet codebase="." code="Clock.class" width=170 height=150>
      alt="Your browser understands the &lt;APPLET&gt; tag but isn't
      running the applet, for some reason."
      Your browser is completely ignoring the &lt;APPLET&gt; tag!
    </applet> 

I'm using icedtea6-plugin 6b18~pre2-1.

Okay, so this is probably a bug specific to IcedTea, not with Sun Java.

Chromium have a similar problem, described in bug #574679 with an
upstream bugreport for Chrome.

With the newest icedtea/openjdk packages it's possible to get Java
working by launching Epiphany with:
 
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.2/ epiphany-browser

Except that as soon as an applet is running, epiphany becomes
unresponsive, fails to respons to input and stops redrawing.

This error is printed on the terminal:

        java version "1.6.0_18"
        OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.8) (6b18-1.8-2)
        OpenJDK Server VM (build 16.0-b13, mixed mode)

Any ideas if this is a problem with Webkit, Icedtea, or in the browser

Adding the Xulrunner path to LD_LIBRARY_PATH seems to the right way for
other browsers to get Icedtea working, at least that's how Chromium does
it, see bug #574679.

The fact that Epiphany hangs on the first applet running is a bug I
guess?

... I don't know how chromium does the LD_LIBRARY_PATH setting, but it's
very likely to break with future versions of xulrunner... (like if you
remove xulrunner-1.9.1 and install iceweasel 3.6.4 from experimental...)

Actually, the whole problem is icedtea6-plugin linking against libxul
and libxpcom when it doesn't need to:

dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: dependency on libxul.so could be avoided if "debian/icedtea6-plugin/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/i386/IcedTeaPlugin.so" were not uselessly linked against it (they use none of its symbols).
dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: dependency on libxpcom.so could be avoided if "debian/icedtea6-plugin/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/i386/IcedTeaPlugin.so" were not uselessly linked against it (they use none of its symbols).

(likewise for a whole bunch of libraries).

This also means the fix for bug #574679 (Cced) is wrong.
