Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: qemu
Version: qemu-kvm
Severity: important
I upgraded kvm in the lenny stream last week:
2010-03-24 09:38:18 upgrade kvm 72+dfsg-5+squeeze1 1:0.12.3+dfsg-4
Unfortunately since doing so running my ubuntu kvm image has become painfully slow, 1 to 2 second screen redraw times. The ubuntu image I am running has performed without issue for nearly 6 months.
Below is some information that I hope will help:
1.) KVM version
$ kvm -version
QEMU PC emulator version 0.12.3 (qemu-kvm-0.12.3), Copyright (c) 2003-2008 Fabrice Bellard
2.) My KVM command
$kvm -hda /home/jgdon/qemu/ubuntu.qcow -cdrom /dev/cdrom -boot c -m 512 -net nic,vlan=0 -net user -vga std -k en-us
3.) This seems to be related to a defect logged against kvm (see below). After asking around on IRC it was recommended to me that the upstream package be bugged:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=574988
4.) More of an aside ... but in case it helps ... I tried re-configuring X11 in ubuntu with the new version of kvm ... it seems to crash (i expect this is unrelated but just in case it gives a hint)
$sudo X11 -configure

severity 575720 normal
thanks
"Downgrading" severity to normal since the problem is
easy to work around (at least in some cases) and because
the probelm does not affect the core functionality.
Yes the cirrus vga is slow, and it's a quite difficult
to find issue in the upstream kvm. Hopefully we'll
see some light on this soon.

Message #29 received at 575720@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
I installed kvm (Squeeze) version 0.12.5 on a fast pc but I can't use
the full-screen mode (1680x1050) or any resolution over 1024x768 because
'Vga' video driver is very slow (unusable). Both 'Vga' and 'Cirrus'
drivers work well only using 1024x768 resolution or less.
Is there e work around for this problem?
tnx.
Njkjta.

Description:
kvm - dummy transitional package from kvm to qemu-kvm
qemu-kvm - Full virtualization on x86 hardware
qemu-kvm-dbg - Debugging info for qemu-kvm
Closes: 574063 574988 575720 603424 604034
Changes:
qemu-kvm (0.14.0+dfsg-1~tls) unstable; urgency=low
.
* 0.14.0 release:
- much improved vga speed (closes: #575720, #574988)
- other bugs (closes: #574063, #603424, #604034)
* removed a ton of old patches that went upstream
* refreshed some patches to apply cleanly to new code
* introduced vgabios (0.6c+ca056d8e77) patch and use that
instead of kvm/vgabios/. Now we can use separate vgabios package
(bios files changed. Now we don't ship vgabios.bin anymore)
* added fix-configure-bin-symlinks.patch to fix ./configure in
case all blobs in the source are removed
* don't ship kvmtrace anymore (does not exist upstream?)
* update debian/rules for the new package layout (esp. "clean" target)
* enable hda (guest) audio device
* apply isa-bus:-Remove-bogus-IRQ-sharing-check-ee951a.diff
from upstream. this makes >4 com ports usable again
(also removes old isa-refine-irq-reservations.patch)
* use external seabios package and depend on it (>> 0.6.1.2)
* move bridge-utils and iproute from Depends to Recommends
* build-depend on xfslibs-dev (for xfs-specific ioctls, not for the library)
* switch to 3.0 (quilt) format (and remove clean-patched target)
* removed 06_no_system_linux_kvm_h.patch (kvm/* isn't used anymore)
* depend on qemu-utils >> 0.14, and deprecate kvm-img, kvm-nbd and kvm-io
(provide script wrappers for them that prints a warning and executes a
real tool from qemu-utils)
