Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: bash-completion
Version: 1:1.1-3
I'm running an Ubuntu laptop on a LAN with ~150 devices that announce as
workstations, and the avahi-browse command used by /etc/bash-completion
takes around 5 seconds to complete. This is quite frustrating if you ssh
a lot!
Would it be possible please to revert this feature, or at least somehow
wrap it in a *very* strict timeout?
Cheers,

Bug 568191 also looks like a duplicate:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=568191
The first complaint is about messages on stderr but that was fixed in
upstream commit bb8912b0:
https://alioth.debian.org/plugins/scmgit/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=bash-completion/bash-completion.git;a=commitdiff;h=bb8912b06ff09f8fed253e7e5b14916e38a48733
Changed Bug title to 'avahi completion waits network timeout or prints error messages' from 'avahi-browse makes ssh completion very slow on large LANs'

I'm removing this patch from Debian [1], because completion with
avahi-browse was never enabled by default (in order to enable it, one
has to set the COMP_KNOWN_HOSTS_WITH_HOSTFILE environment variable, as
described in the documentation [2]), so the patch is only making it
impossible for people who actually want to complete with avahi-browse
to enabled it.
If this starts to cause trouble to people again, then we'll have to
investigate what is actually going on.
Kind regards,
Gabriel
