I am really interested in the package, even I've been hoping that
would be possible to package the Ubuntu version, but theirs, strongly
depends on Python2.6.
I have no idea in packaging except for some other Debian packages I
rebuilt my self just for adding compilation options to the package.
But I never made a package from scratch.
Since I do really want the package to be built, I could learn how. The
question is where to?

Kartik, you get several offers of help. I hope you responded because it
would be good to see an updated gwibber in Debian.

We have python 2.6 by default in sid now, so this is no longer a blocker.
I hope you can all work together and quickly update the version in Debian
based on the work done by Ubuntu.
The ubuntu package builds unmodified on Debian but it requires some
packages which are in NEW for now (libindicate for python-indicate).
It does not work here though, it has troubles with desktopcouch
apparently not sure why.

Why is this a blocker?
I don't see why the split is required for gwibber.

gwibber uses desktopcouch to store messages, and desktopcouch starts a
local couchdb instance... the question is why doesn't it work as it
should?
Here it managed to start the local couchdb but apparently the port number
that has been allocated has never been communicated back to the client
application through dbus.
In your cases it rather looks like that the server was no longer there
(or do you have firewalling that could forbid it?).

I think there is a permissions problem in /etc/couchdb/ giving
permissions to read and execute directories recursively solved
launching the ubuntu version of the package.
So I installed gwibber, gwibber-service and gwibber-themes from lucid
and changed permissions in /etc/couchdb/ as
# chmod -R o+rX /etc/couchdb/
And then I could launch gwibber 2.30.0.1

Perhaps I didn't mention that it is necessary restart couchdb daemon
after such changes in /etc/couchdb/ folder permissions. And I don't
know if it is really necessary, but worked for me, I also had to erase
~/.local/share/desktop-couch/ the first time, because I had some wrong
configuration from earlier tries.

I'm giving up Gwibber for adoption to any much better active

Best luck!

Anytime.
Best deal is to first do following:
1. Get latest Ubuntu source package.
2. Rebuilt it on Debian Sid without Unity support (you may need to patch)
3. Look for Debian Policy updates, fixes. (Lintian and other usual ways)
4. Test.
5. Done :)
You may need Debian API key to connect with Twitter. Feel free to
create one, else posting will show as Ubuntu. Check current source for
idea.

Sure thing. I would be glad to maintain the package with you.

I am not a Debian Developer myself, so we would still have to find
someone within Debian to sponsor uploads of the package.
Karitk, would you potentially available as a sponsor?
I have built and maintained Debian packages before, but only for work
and my own private use. So, my experience is a bit limited so far.
> How would I get involved on this project and if

First thing would probably be to download the source package or check
out my git repository. Then get yourself comfortable with the
packaging and the tools involved.
Fell free to contact me if you have questions? Another good place to
ask questions is debian-mentors@lists.debian.org.
Thanks,
David

Pleased to hear that. Thanks.

One question about that.
I thought it might be a possibility to try to get the current version
in unstable RC-bug free and try to get a freeze-exception once that is
done.
The other possibility would be to just package current upstream and
provide packages in wheezy-backports once wheezy is out.
What do you think?
Thanks,
David

Not possible since gwibber is no longer in testing.

Better idea, indeed.

I've tried to rebuild Ubuntu source+some fixes. You can have a look at,
http://people.debian.org/~kartik/packages/gwibber/
This is where we can go ahead. We can setup collab-maint repo etc.

Oh, cool. That's a bit further than I've gotten so far.
One thing I've noticed is that the package FTBFS in the current form,
i.e. I have to run debuild twice to build it. A possible way to fix
this is attached as patch.

Setting up a repo would be good indeed. Could you do that? I would be
in favor of git as VCS, but feel free to choose something else. I
guess you will need my alioth account name. It is davrieb-guest.
Thanks,
