Package: kernel-package
Version: 11.015
Severity: important
File: /usr/bin/make-kpkg
make-kpkg fails to build linux-image-2.6.33 .deb, because
$kernel_src/include/linux/utsrelease.h is no longer updated (i assume this is
because this functionality is moved to $kernel_src/include/generated/utsrelease.h)
I using vanilla kernel.org source, kept uptodate via kernel.org patches.

Is there a chance that this fix will end up in stable
any time soon?

Unfortunately, not very high. And as a package maintainer, I
have little control over that; release policy is set by the stable
release managers, and I am not sure that building kernel images meets
the bar for inclusion into stable.
I suspect that kernel-package would be easy to backport, though,
since it does not use any perl or make facilities that were not
present in Lenny. One might have to also backport the /sbin/installkernel
shell script (((((((((again, fairly trivial)

IMHO it should. Building custom kernels is pretty much standard,
to get fixes for kernel bugs and support for new hardware.
Considering that 2.6.33 fixes a memory handling bug introduced
in 2.6.30, which causes the kernel to fail to allocate memory
and hence lock up for seconds, i'd say this fix for kernel-package
should be backported rather sooner than later.
Is there anything we can do as users, to help you getting this
backport done and included into stable?

Also I was with this problem past monday trying to compile Linux
2.6.33.1 in Debian Lenny amd64. We will have some estimation of when it
could be solved?
Thanks in advance for your reply.

Daniel

You could ask at least on debian-release@lists.debian.org. Given the fix
is fairly simple and easy to review I think they would accept it.
They are interested in keeping stable usable as well as stable. :)
