Subject: xserver-xorg-video-geode: Evidence of memory corruption in bitmaps
Date: Sat, 20 Feb 2010 12:45:34 +0100
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: xserver-xorg-video-geode
Version: 2.11.7-1
Severity: normal

In web browsers (I tried both iceweasel and epiphany/webkit), whenever
there is some text with a background image, the rendering shows
evidence of memory corruption (see attached screenshot); every redraw
(virtual screen switch, scrolling the text, etc.) ends up with a
different faulty rendering (some memory buffer is not properly cleaned
up?). Effects are unpredictable (change in colors, dotty lines, etc.).

Dear Martin-Éric Racine,

It does fix the problems of icons and some other gtk canvas I could see.
Kudos to you!

Unfortunately, the trouble of rendering in iceweasel an epiphany
reported in #570637 is still present :/ (I test with
http://www.liberation.fr a page with lots of different background
images, since the problem always involves a background-image property;
when the image is blocked (even just that one), the problem
disappear).

Current config (I think that everything is up-to-date) :
ii xorg 1:7.5+5
X.Org X Window System
ii xserver-xorg 1:7.5+5
the X.Org X server
ii xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.6-2
Xorg X server - core server
ii xserver-xorg-video-geode 2.11.7-3
X.Org X server -- Geode GX2/LX display driver

Cheers,
Sam

Is the issue resolved if you completely disable compositing as described at:

http://q-funk.blogspot.com/2010/04/xf86-video-geode-exa-composite-support.html

If this resolves it, we might be getting closer to resolving a few
more issues. Please let us know.

Hi Martin-Éric,

Strangely enough, it seems that, from time to time, the status bar (in
iceweasel, at least, that’s the main GUI program I use on the geode)
just blacks out since I added the Option "EXANoComposite" "true".
Forcing redrawing clears the problem but there must be something a bit
fishy there somewhere :/
(The strangest aspect being that it seems to be the only place where a
problem appears)

Cheers
Sam

Hello Sam,

Thanks for this precision. I have a feeling that opening a separate
bug just for this issue against the Geode X.org driver on the
FreeDesktop Bugzilla might be worth it, because it seems that the
Gecko rendering engine exposes a whole different kind of bugs than the
GTK2+ icon issue exposed.

Does the

    Option "EXAOptimizeMigration" "off"

make any difference for this?

Dear Martin-Éric,

2010/6/19 Martin-Éric Racine <q-funk@iki.fi>:
> Does the Geode 2.11.8-5 that just entered Debian/unstable improve the situation?

No change for me, I retried without
        Option "EXANoComposite" "true"
        Option "EXAOptimizeMigration" "off"
and with simply
        Option "EXANoComposite" "true"

The behaviours are similar to the ones in -4.

By the way I forgot to report that with both options activated, it
works (and worked in -4) correctly for me.

Cheers
Sam

Hello,

I got a new kind of crash yesterday, in version -7. I was testing
without Option "EXAOptimizeMigration" "off" (now I’m no longer sure
whether Option "EXANoComposite" "true" was active or not, I think it
was not). Anyway, X got stuck in an infinite loop, it seems, detected
quite some time after it froze.

(I doubt this report, too fuzzy, would be helpful, but still).

Cheers

Dear Martin-Éric,

Sorry about that, it seems that there is still some issue with
compositing bitmaps in the geode driver. Even if it appears very
rarely now (inside the bitmaps of an email attached to another one in
evolution, in case this brings some hint of the widget stack of the
occurrence). I just tried with the EXA options disabled, not (yet)
with them enabled.

Cheers,
Sam

Hi, Sam,

As you said it seems that there is still some issue with
compositing bitmaps in the geode driver 2.11.9-3, then run the
"evolution", but in my platform (the display resolution is 1280x1024,
Graphic memory is 24Mb, using the latest geode-driver), it seems OK as
in the screenshot (http://imagebin.ca/view/tQkE5TH.html).
So I hope you can tell me the reproduce steps more detail, we
can trace this issue and follow it.

Thanks,
Hunk Cui

Hi Hunk and Martin-Éric

Sorry for the slow answer. I didn’t really find how to reproduce the
bug, by narrowing it down to a small example.
I’m right now using version 2.11.9-7. Evolution seems less prone to
the picture glitches I mentioned. And I do not really know who’s to
blame in the X stack :/ Maybe the window manager? (I’m using e16
debian package 0.16.8.13-4). Or simply Evolution itself (but it does
not show off on a different non-geode computer)? So maybe I’m just
being silly.

I attach an extract of a mail that raises some issues. Within this
smaller example, I get few errors though.
One common error is the fact that selecting the image and text around
sometimes leaves the image blank instead of greyed.
Another is traces when moving windows over the images.
I attach a screenshot of the border of the image after moving a window
that overlapped the image (the trace is rounded as the window edge
is).

The two other screenshots are more impressive and taken while reading
the full original email. The first shows the result of tab-switching
evolution on top of a xterm window, the second the “trace” of a xterm
after it has been moved.

Does it help in any way, at least to pinpoint the culprit?

Best regards
Sam

Hi, Sam,

As you said this issue seems less prone to the picture glitches when using 2.11.9-7, Is it just occur in Evolution? Is it reproduced in other application program?
Hope you can tell me more about the reproduce step when you use the Evolution and attach your Xorg.0.log and Xorg.conf file.

Thanks,
Hunk Cui

I indeed have seen it appear only in Evolution, with html mails with
images coming from that same mailing list, I think. (I receive very
few html mails, and I use very few gui applications, so I can only
imagine it might also appear in other circumstances).

The glitches do not seem to be really deterministic, I do not really
know how to reproduce them reliably on my computer, so let alone
elsewhere :/
Find attached the log and conf, for what it’s worth.

Very seldom, in fact (which makes it all the way harder to reproduce
and pinpoint :/).

The bug got harder to produce, it seems.
Still, by randomly and fast moving a (xterm) window over an (always the
same) Evolution window displaying some html message, some corruption
appears where the window should have properly been refreshed.
Nevertheless, it’s far from clear for me whether X-Geode or Evolution
(its html viewer) should bear the blame for this. The shadow of the
window is mostly black, with some random glitches sometimes. I attach a
partial screenshot.

Just to verify, under which X server version do you run Geode 2.11.12?
On which Debian release?

Yep! => closed

Reporter has not replied to repeated messages, asking whether newer
upstream releases have fixed this. His last message is dated from
February 2011.

Personally, I cannot reproduce this.

Closing this bug. Please feel free to re-open if necessary.
