Subject: gmplayer randomly crashes
Date: Fri, 05 Feb 2010 13:44:56 +0100
Package: mplayer
Version: 1.0~rc3+svn20090405-1+b1
Severity: normal

The latest gmplayer in squeeze randomly crashes with signal 11. It only happens when gmplayer starts to play a video. It plays the same video without problem after the second try.

signal 11 is also known as segmentation fault. Can you please install
the package mplayer-dbg and generate a meaningful backtrace? the option
'-crash-debug' should be helpful for that.

More importantly, do these crashes always occur at the same location? If
not, this looks like a hardware failure to me.

It's completely random, there is no pattern. One time out of five this crash
happens with gmplayer.
When I used mplayer without gui this never happened. When I downgraded from
1.0~rc3+svn20090405-1+b1 to 1.0~rc3+svn20090405-1 this crash never happened
with gmplayer.

So I tried to reproduce the crash in gdb. And it didn't happen. I kept trying
without success. If I didn't try in gdb then it was just a matter of seconds
until I could reproduce the crash.

Chris

There have been no code changes in mplayer between these two
versions. Therefore for me it is rather hard to believe that these
crashes originate from a bug in the mplayer package. Can you prehaps
recompile the package yourself and see if this fixes the symptoms?

well, then try seting 'ulimit -c unlimited' and load the resulting
corefiles in gdb.
