Hi!

I've just found out what seems to be a problematic regression.

Steps to reproduce:

  # aptitude install xml-resume-library
  $ cat test.xml
  <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
  <!DOCTYPE resume PUBLIC "-//Sean Kelly//DTD Resume 1.5.1//EN"

All this used to work flawlessly about one year ago (on Debian testing).

The error seems to be generated by file supp-pdf.mkii, which belongs to
package texlive-latex-base.
Please reassign the bug report as appropriate, in case I selected the
wrong package!

Please help me, I cannot understand what's wrong and this prevents
*any* XML resume to be compiled in PDF format.

I see this issue as well when make dist-ing valgrind and have no idea
how to workaround it, short of disabling the PDF manuals.

Did you find a better workaround?

   Thanks,

Well, thanks for confirming the presence of the bug: it's always good
when someone else tells you that you're *not* the only one who's bitten
by an issue! ;-)

Unfortunately, I didn't...
I was hoping for a reply from the Debian TeX Maintainers!

Subject: pdfxmltex stumbles over supp-pdf.mkii
Date: Sat, 13 Feb 2010 05:08:48 +0100
Dear Heiko, dear TeX Live gurus,

if we run pdfxmltex in TL 2009 in pdf mode it dies with:

> (/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/context/base/supp-pdf.mkii
> ! You can't use `macro parameter character #' in horizontal mode.
> l.82 \def\@@mptopdf@@twodigitrounding#
> 1%

supp-pdf.mkii is loaded by hyperref.

That is hard to trigger in original upstream TeX Live because there
is another bug in the pdfxmltex.ini file in upstream TL2009, which
makes it use dvi mode all the time, since it loads first pdftexconfig.ini
and then xmltex.ini which in turn loads latex.ini which in turn
turns off pdfoutput... I will fix that one myself, but the above
problem is still present.

Best wishes

Norbert

supp-pdf.mkii is loaded by pdftex.def, that is loaded by the
color package and the color package is loaded if hyperref has
seen option `colorlinks'.
  And pdftex.def uses \AtBeginDocument to load supp-pdf.mkii.

But the format pdfxmltex has not loaded neither color nor hyperref.
And the log file of debian that is shown for debian bug report 566591
only shows supp-pdf.mkii without hyperref and without color or pdftex.def.
But the .log file is generated by xmlto (I don't know it), that
seems to use a different format than TL's pdfxmltex.

Yours sincerely
  Heiko <oberdiek@uni-freiburg.de>

Ah, ok, that is a long queue I didn't get.

I attach a .fo file that is intermediately generated by xmlto. Running
pdfxmltex on it shows the same problem. I also attach the log file of
running it through pdfxmltex.

All that was done on an up2date TL2009 (not Debian package) with
a fixed pdfxmltex (that does pdf output).

Do you have any idea what is going on here?

Best wishes

First, I checked in the fix for pdfxmltex.ini.

    (/home/norbert/tl/2009/texmf-dist/tex/context/base/supp-pdf.mkii
! You can't use `macro parameter character #' in horizontal mode.
    l.82 \def\@@mptopdf@@twodigitrounding#

Is there any way to "escape" into TeX in an xmltex document?

Anyway, to make a start at debugging this, I copied xmltex.cfg to my current
directory and appended
  {\globaldefs=1\loggingall}\nonstopmode
as the last line. The resulting big log file shows that supp-pdf.mkii
is being read with unusual (xmltex's, I suppose) catcodes. \, for
example, expands to \utfeightay \

Since supp-pdf.mkii is being loaded at \begin{document} time, I suppose
xmltex's catcodes are already in effect. \GPT@catcodes seems to be
getting invoked, and it doesn't include \catcode`\\=0. And just adding
it in the obvious way caused new and worse errors.

Evidently color is getting loaded by xmltex's sec.xmt, which is what
triggers the rest. And presumably that is necessary. So I guess we
somehow have to either arrange for the right catcodes to be set, or add
an option to pdftex.def to tell it not to load supp-pdf.mkii. I tried
disabling those inputs in pdftex.def, and then your sample .fo did get
processed ok. And xmltex is not likely to need to transparently read
.mps files.

No solution yet, but that's my allotment for today.

k

Thanks.

If someone thinks, I am paranoid because of the excessive
catcode settings, then this example proves that I must be
even more paranoid.

Therefore I added more settings to \GPT@catcodes
(backslash, curly braces, space, tab, endline char).

pdftex.def 0.04n is available temporarily:
  http://www.informatik.uni-freiburg.de/~oberdiek/tmp/pdftex.def
CTAN update is on its way, but I had problems updating the
berlios project of pdftex.def.

Thanks to you, for reporting the problem upstream!

Do I understand correctly that replacing
/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/pdftex-def/pdftex.def
(from package texlive-latex-base) with the above modified pdftex.def
file is supposed to fix the bug?

Are you going to upload a fixed Debian revision of texlive-latex-base
soon?

Should I manually overwrite
/usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/pdftex-def/pdftex.def
on my system, in the meanwhile, in order to fix the bug until I upgrade
to the next texlive-latex-base revision?
Any other manual steps to perform?

Thanks for your time.

Yes, that is the fix that will be included.

NOTTAGE (n.)
Nottage is the collective name for things which you find a use for
immediately after you've thrown them away. For instance, your
greenhouse has been cluttered up for years with a huge piece of
cardboard and great fronds of gardening string. You at last decide to
clear all this stuff out, and you burn it. Within twenty-four hours
you will urgently need to wrap a large parcel, and suddenly remember
that luckily in your greenhouse there is some cardb...

Well, it's important that it is actually included in the next upload.
If the next upload has to be postponed a little bit, it's OK anyway.

Of course, the sooner the better for the whole user base...

I've just tried: I can confirm that it fixes the bug.
Thanks for helping out! :-)

I can also confirm that the manual fix does not require any other
action: for the interested readers, just replace the file and get away
