Hallo Thomas,

as said this morning by private mail, attached is a patch to get libdbi
updated and provide also the package-config file I requested.

The patch just add as much as necessary to get the build done.
It does not change the source of the library. However, you'll
need to rerun autotools, as I didn't want to path auto-generated files.
(probably you want to add the call to autogen.sh in debian/rules
before calling configure, as this will eliminate some linitan warnings
my patch introduces patch-system-but-direct-changes-in-diff warnings)

I think this decission is up to you.

Instructions (I'll try to add convenience to your expericence ;-)

wget
'https://sourceforge.net/projects/libdbi/files/libdbi/libdbi-0.8.3/libdbi-0.8.3.tar.gz/download'
cp libdbi-0.8.3.tar.gz libdbi_0.8.3.orig.tar.gz
tar xzf libdbi-0.8.3.tar.gz
cd libdbi-0.8.3
cat ../libdbi_debianize_0.8.3.2.patch | patch -p1
dpatch apply-all
./autogen.sh
dpatch deapply-all

Hallo Thomas,

Well, giving you a patch which introduces linitan warnings is on a second thought not my definition
of a good patch.

The attached patch fixes that and should be applied after my first patch. Then you will only have one
warning left:
W: libdbi source: ancient-standards-version 3.7.2 (current is 3.8.3)

Again, here's some convenience added to build the package:

In Ubuntu, we've applied the attached patch to achieve the following:

  * New upstream release.
  * adding docbook build dependency to fix html manual building
  * debian/rules: make upstream version dynamic for /usr/share/doc clearing

We thought you might be interested in doing the same.

Please excuse my submitting two patches for this bug, and ignore the
earlier (huge) patch, as it is incorrect.

The attached patch simply bumps the upstream to 0.8.3 and makes the
upstream revision dynamic for any future releases of libdbi.

Hi Clint,

Thanks a lot for this patch, it really does help.

I'll use it and upload the latest version in SID whenever I have time.

BTW, are you the current maintainer of libdbi in Ubuntu? Do you do some
maintainer work in Debian as well? Would you be interested in adopting
the package in Debian, as I got quite some work to do with other
packages? I can still handle it, but it can be a bit delayed considering
that this one doesn't have my priority. In fact, I had previously worked
on the last version, but the 0.8.2 works very well and that the 0.8.3
doesn't have so much improvements, so I didn't have enough time to
finish the work and upload...

Thanks again for the patch, it's really appreciated,

Thomas Goirand (zigo)

Ubuntu doesn't always define strong package<->maintainer relationships. With a small team and a narrow focus on main, we all just make sure that all the packages in main work together and stay up to date.

That said, I'm keenly interested in seeing libdbi flourish, as it seems like there are a number of cool packages making use of it that sit inside my own sphere of interest. I would be more than thrilled to take on maintenance of libdbi in Debian, as I'd like to go down the path toward DD status.

As far as my reasons for wanting v0.8.3, I haven't reported this bug yet, because I haven't tried it on Debian specifically (installing a base squeeze vm right now to do just that), but there is actually a problem with using rrdtool 1.4 and libdbi 0.8.2, that causes an abort. Its most likely due to the age of 0.8.2 and the fact that the rrdtool authors developed and tested using 0.8.3.

Your time and attention to the package are also quite appreciated. Thanks!

I have no particular interest in libdbi myself, I only did its packaging
because I am maintaining libapache2-mod-log-sql which has a dependency
for libdbi. I don't even use it myself, which makes me a very bad
tester. That being said, this is the only library that I maintain, and I
have technical interest in maintaining a library (I want to make sure
I'm up-to-date with knowledge of it). What packages are you using that
also use libdbi?

Maybe we could work together on it then, and make you the official
maintainer of libdbi, while I'll be doing only sponsorship, and continue
to learn. If you want to do this way, then I can push an RFA, you'll
adopt the package, and we'll maintain together. Does this sounds like a
good plan for you?

I didn't now rrdtool was making use of libdbi. Can you explain to me
when it does?

Well, I didn't even have time to review your patch yet! :)
