Version: 1:6.12.4-2
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
Hi,

after an upgrade to version 6.12.4-2 from 6.12.3-1 I get nothing but a
mouse cursor and a black screen when I resume the machine from suspend
to disk or RAM.

The mouse cursor and keyboard apperently work fine in the "invisible"
X-session: I can type my password into the invisiable GNOME screensaver
and blindly do things like starting music playback in rhythmbox - so
obviously everything is up and running but not displayed on the screen
(except the mouse cursors).

Switching to a text console seems to work, but it's also invisable. I
can blindly log in and run commands. I tried restarting GDM/X from the
console. When I restart gdm I get back a visible GDM/X and after that
it's again possible to switch back to a visible (!) text console.

I wanted to try out the same sequence of suspend, resume, black screen
(?) with radeonhd, but when I use that driver my machine completely
locks up when suspend is trying to snapshot the system. Sorry, I can't
give any information with that configuration.

Turning off and on compositing in metacity (gconf key:
/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager) didn't fix anything. Also,
I am not running compiz nor KMS and there is no self-compiled stuff in
use. The only "special" thing is, that I'm using mesa 7.7 from
experimental. But when 6.12.3-1 was installed I had mesa 7.7~rc2-1
packages from experimental installed and suspend/resume worked just
fine with these packages!

Some other stuff about the machine:

Would be interesting to try building 6.12.3-1 against current
xserver-xorg-dev and see if that still works with the current
xserver-xorg-core.

I'll give it a try tomorrow as I can't access the machine today.

In the meantime I found out something interesting: I can reproduce the
same bug on a completely different machine, my Intel-based notebook.
It's only a 32bit system and, in contrast to my other machine, it runs
KMS.

Right after installing the mesa 7.7 packages from experimental and
restarted X, I can suspend the notebook and after resume the notebook
ends up with a completely black screen (not even the mouse pointer is
visiable) but everything else apperently works: I blindly switched to a
console and could reboot the notebook. When switching to the KMS
framebuffer console the screen also remains all black.

I upgraded libgl1-mesa-dri, libgl1-mesa-glx, libglu1-mesa and mesa-utils
to 7.7-1 on the notebook (it's the same on my other machine) to
reproduce the bug. After downgrading to mesa 7.6.1 packages on the
notebook suspend+resume worked fine again and without a black screen.

I'll try downgrading mesa on my other machine with the Radeon GPU
tomorrow to check out if that will fix the bug on that machine.

Ok, obviously I addressed this bug report to the wrong package, but I
need to do some more testing to find out the right package where to
forward the report ;)

I'll also try the older radeon 6.12.13-1 on the newer xserver-xorg-core
2:1.7.4-1 package with mesa 7.6.1 and 7.7 to check what will happen with
these configurations.

It could also be different problems with similar symptoms. Log in via
ssh and check the X log file, the gdm/kdm log file and dmesg for any
relevant output when the screen is black.

I did have a look at the log files on my amd64 machine, but there's
nothing in them when the screen and the text console stay black. Nothing
in Xorg.log, .xsession-errors and kern.log. TBH I forgot to look into
gdm.log.

On the Intel-based notebook I didn't look into .xsession-errors and
gdm.log. Xorg.log and kern.log don't contain any hints about what's
going wrong, not even anything from the - usually more verbose - i915
kernel module KMS/GEM code.

Things like assertion failures or unresolved symbols are only visible on
the X server stderr output, which should be captured in the gdm log
file.

Ok, I didn't think of that, thanks! I'll keep a closer look on GDM's log
files.

I had a look at the five left-over :0.log* files in /var/log/gdm on my
Intel-based notebook. I can't find anything in them that could point out
what's wrong when the screen remains black, and yes, these five files
cover resumed X sessions that led to a black screen after resuming the
notebook.

Maybe there's something in the logs on my amd64/Radeon system. I'll look
at these files tomorrow.

I had some annoying trouble to suspend the machine. To make things
short: For the whole weekend I only got two cycles of suspend -> resume,
as the box locks up when the system is snapshotted...

But I found out something interesting: I'm using GNOME as desktop
environment, so I'm also using gnome-screensaver. Quite funny: If I make
GNOME *not* start the gnome-screensaver, then, of course, the screen
doesn't get locked by the gnome-screensaver when the machine is
suspended and resumed. But then I get *no* black screen after the
resume, and also switching to a text console shows up text!

Maybe it's some crazy bullshit, but I have a guess where this could come
from: ;) gnome-screensaver fades the display to black when it gets
active, maybe this is done by manipulating color/contrast/whatever
settings (?). I guess so, because the text "snapshotting the system" at
the text console is often very dark and sometimes invisiable after
gnome-screensaver got active to lock the screen before the machine
starts the suspend procedure.
Now, if the machine gets resumed, maybe these color/contrast/whatever
settings don't get successfully restored or restored at all.

It's a stupid guess, but maybe it points someone into the right
correction what causes this regression bug. The bug appears since
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.4-1 and its dependencies is installed on that
system.

Btw.: My first attempt to downgrade mesa packages back to 7.6.1-1 did
not fix the bug as it did on my notebook. But let's better leave that
out to avoid confusion. The current workaround to avoid the black screen
after resume is to disable gnome-screensaver.

Do you have any hints where I should have a closer look at? I'd like to
have a look at these color/contrast/whatever settings of the X server
and/or the graphics hardware, to compare them before and after a resume
if they are changed. But I have no idea how to obtain these settings
from the X server. Do you know to I can access them?

Cheers - Fuddl

If that is the case, running something like

DISPLAY=:0 xgamma -gamma 1.0

from an ssh login might restore the display.

Great, that helps! After calling this command also the text console
becomes visible again, when I switch to a text VT.

Before I executed xgamma -gamma 1.0 I queried the X server by calling
xgamma about the current settings and the output of xgamma was, that the
values for RGB were already all set to 1.0! So it looks as if the state
of the X server and the graphics hardware aren't the same after
resuming.

Is there a possibility to query the graphics hardware about gamma
settings directly?

Maybe the X server or driver doesn't (properly) restore the hardware
CLUT on resume.

Does this workaround also help on the other machine with an Intel GPU?

Not sure there's anything better than looking at the monitor. :)

Great hint with the xgamma thing. Anyway, this maybe is of some interest
to someone:

when the screen of my machine remains black, i can still connect an
external monitor and everything is fine there. maybe this helps narrowing
down the problems origin.

btw: i'm running testing...how did these xorg updates even make it there?
- this report is dated 14th, the update was available only recently. maybe
i should familiarize myself with debians package policy, since until now i
thought this sort of thing "couldn't" happen (to me this bug is somewhat
severe).

cheers

Yes, the workaround also works on my notebook with the Intel GPU! Hm,
looks as if it's a bug in the X server itself. I browsed the bug reports
against xserver-xorg-core but didn't find something that could be the
same or a similar bug as I'm experiencing it.

A further experiment to collect information:

On the Intel notebook I tried blindly to restore gamma values from the
KMS framebuffer text console with DISPLAY=:0.0 xgamma -gamma 1.0 but
that didn't bring back neither the framebuffer console nor the X session
when I tried to switch to it.

Only Blindly unlocking the GNOME screensaver and issuing the xgamma
command restores the gamma values for the X session and also the KMS
framebuffer text. Btw.: Also at the framebuffer console when I issued
the xgamma command before, xgamma claimed that the gamma settings
already were all set to 1.0 for R, G and B.

I didn't yet try to get back gamma values on the ATI/AMD GPU from the
text console (no KMS!) on my desktop machine.

So it seems like maybe the X server doesn't properly keep track of the
CLUT values / make sure they're applied to the hardware across VT
switches...

Hi!

I had the same problem here, except that at my laptop with dual screen
setup only the external screen kept blank after wakeup from suspend to
disk/RAM. Executing "xgamma -gamma 1.0" perfectly restored its output.

Some details:
 - ASUS M6V Laptop
 - ATI Technologies Inc M24 1P [Radeon Mobility X600] rev 0
 - "radeon" driver
 - LCD mounted to the laptop worked after wakeup, but external
   (connected with VGA) didn't
 - Debian sid, last updated on 2010-02-05
 - xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.12.4-3
 - xscreensaver, xscreensaver-data, xscreensaver-gl 5.10-7
 - gnome-screensaver 2.28.0-2
 - xscreensaver-gnome 4.21-4

Bye
  Hansi

And some other news from tests:

After installing xserver-xorg-video-radeon and mesa 7.7, both from
experimental, the AMD/ATI machine is able to run compiz (Works really
surprisingly stable - but that's off topic here ;).

I installed compiz packages also on the Notebook with Intel GPU. To my
surprise *both* machines could suspend and resume without any black
screen at all! I don't have too many suspend/resume cycles until now,
but ATM it seems as if both machines resume reliably when they're
running compiz.

Ok, I think it's time to write a little summary for those interested in
trying to reproduce the "black screen after resume" ;)

      * Tested with: AMD/ATI GPU on amd64 system and all Intel stuff
with Intel GPU on i386 system
      * KMS or no KMS -- on both systems it doesn't matter.
      * Software - that likely is - involved: Metacity, configured as
        compositing manager (Use gconf-editor to
        set /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager to 'true') and
        GNOME screensaver
      * Before doing any testing, I suggest to set up a short key that
starts a terminal and make sure that new windows get the input
focus, you might find that quite useful afterwards...
      * Suspend the machine to disk by the freaky GNOME shutdown dialog.
Before the machine switches to either the VGA or KMS framebuffer
text console, GNOME screensaver should softly fade the screen to
        black
      * Now resume the box and there should be back a running and
responsive system with a black screen. Also X *and* VGA and KMS
        framebuffer consoles should remain black!
      * The GNOME screensaver should be running on the all black X
session -- Try unlocking it blindly with your password
      * Hopefully one has configured the short key to fire up a terminal
window. Press that shortcut and blindly execute 'xgamma -gamma
1' -- You should have normal output on the screen in X and at
the VGA or KMS framebuffer text console. When everything is
back, one should see, that xgamma also prints the gamma settings
as they were BEFORE the command was issued. It should say, that
RGB channeles were set to 1.0 all the time.
      * My current workaround? Install compiz, suspend, resume and there
should be no black screen anymore!

My conclusion: It's hardware and driver independent, so it's likely to
be a bug in the core xserver. ...and somehow the usage of AIGLX by
compiz works around that issue. So, I'm stuck here and have no further
clue what else to test or look at.

Cheers - Fuddl

Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon
Version: 1:6.12.4-2
Severity: normal

I got the similar symptoms on my IBM thinkpad X32 : after resuming from
hibernation, the system is working, but the display is bad. On the vt
running X, I can only see the X cursor. I can go to other VT (i.e. VT1)
and login, but I also see the X cursor on these VTs.

I didn't achieve to workaround this with the xgamma stuff. However, if I
login into VT1 and restart GDM, everything works fine.

I am not sure it is the same bug, so I apologise if I ditn't report it
in the right place.

That might explain why I haven't seen the problem, as I run compiz
almost exclusively. :)

Does the problem also occur with Metacity with compositing disabled?
What about other window managers?

If DRI2 is enabled on the Intel machine, compiz probably isn't using
AIGLX. I think it's more likely related to some kind of colourmap
related interaction unique to compiz or Metacity.

I can't understand why, but since some days, after resuming, my display
is not black anymore but gray, and the xgamma workaround now works.

I'm using metacity without the composing manager.

Sounds like maybe previously the panel backlight was off in addition to
the CLUT problem.

I encounter exact same problem on ThinkPad T60p, and the xgamma
workaround resolved the problem for me.

Detail information of my system:
VGA Card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc
M56GL [Mobility FireGL V5200]
Window Manager: Gnome metacity (no compiz installed)
Kernel: Linux xxxx 2.6.32-trunk-686 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10 06:32:16 UTC
2010 i686 GNU/Linux
Gnome ScreenSaver is installed.

There have been quite a few updates to both xserver-xorg-core and
xserver-xorg-video-radeon in the past month. Do you still have the
problem? with these versions in Squeeze?
If so, what about with KMS + 2.6.32-4(-10) and radeon from sid?

With recent xorg driver, I can get screen back when suspend to memory.
But the problem still exists when suspend to disk, so the workaround
is still needed when I suspend to disk.
Using the latest radeon driver from sid cannot help on this.

I tried xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.12.6-1 and 1:6.12.192-2, both
not working in STD mode.
The kernel I'm using is 2.6.32-3-686 from testing.

You want to try 2.6.32-4 since it contains DRM from 2.6.33

It works.
I tried 2.6.32-4, the problem has gone and now I can see my desktop
without any workaround. (both STR & STD)

Thank you all.

ATM it's still hard to tell from my machines, since suspend is still
terrible unstable on both, my Intel notebook and my AMD desktop machine.

Yesterday the AMD box did a successful suspend-resume cycle and the
problem did not occur! So for me it's OK if the bug is closed. If I'll
notice any black screens after resumes (when that will work reliably
again *sigh* ;) I'll reopen the bug.

Cheers and thanks - Fuddl

Yes, I still have these issues with xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.12.6-1
and xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.6-1 (uptodate versions in squeeze)

The last news I got was that KMS didn't worked well on my laptop (IBM
X32). Perhaps will I retry one day…

Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon
Severity: normal

The behaviour changed some days ago : now, CTRL+ALT+F1 followed by
CTRL+ALT+F7 after a resume solves the problem.

With xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.12.6-1 and xserver-xorg-core
2:1.7.6.901-3 (in squeeze) it works well.

With KMS, suspend (either to disk or to RAM) is broken, so I can't try.

Sorry that was an issue in gnome-screensaver, see 580228.

So I think it's possible to close this bug.

Hi,

after some kind of rest period, this bug is happening again,
from time to time.

hardware: Thinkpad X32 (Radeon Mobility M6 LY)

KMS disabled (as hibernation is broken on my hardware with KMS
enabled)

xserver-xorg-video-radeon: 1:6.13.1-1
xserver-xorg 1:7.5+6
linux-image-2.6.32-5-686 2.6.32-15
libgnomekbd4 2.30.1-2
window manager: xmonad
gnome-screensaver is running

The xgamma trick always works.

I'm going to try with xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.13.1-2,
and linux-image-2.6.35-rc5-686/experimental.

Bye,

Please file your own bug. Adding more confusion to this old one won't
help.
