Subject: gnome-session: Reboot and shutdown don't always work
Date: Wed, 06 Jan 2010 15:55:25 +0000
Package: gnome-session
Version: 2.28.0-4
Severity: normal
Sometimes when I clcik Restart or Shutdown in the menu or panel applet I
get logged out but then the gdm login screen comes up instead of the
system rebooting or halting as requested. It stays there until I choose
Shutdown or Restart from its Actions/Options menu. This happens on a
32-bit unstable system I use too. FWIW both systems are configured for
gdm to automatically log me in.
I think this is a problem with gnome-session rather than gdm because I
used to use ROX-Session, which requests gdm to shutdown or reboot via
its socket interface, and that always worked correctly.

This is probably a problem in consolekit. It could be related to an
issue Luca encountered while trying out GDM 2.28.
Does killing any console-kit-daemon process before logging out trigger
the bug for sure?

No, I tried that and it rebooted as requested.

I had a look at gnome-session's source and saw that it tries to use
consolekit first with gdm's socket interface as a fallback, whereas
ROX-Session doesn't use consolekit at all and tries gdm's socket
interface first. So this does look like a consolekit problem, perhaps
this bug should be reassigned.

I'm not surprised this didn't trigger the bug, because that would have
removed what appears to be the cause of it and made gnome-session fall
back on the more reliable gdm interface.

I think there's a race condition somewhere causing this, and my guess is
it has something to do with gdm respawning.
3 different things tend to happen:
1. My desktop disappears to be replaced by the console with the usual
shutdown messages.
2. The console is shown briefly, but is quickly replaced by gdm's login
screen, which stays there; shutdown has been aborted.
3. gdm reappears rather like in case (2), but it quickly disappears and
shutdown continues
Shutdown failure happens most often on the slowest of my PCs, an
Athlon64 3000+, running 32-bit Debian. It happened only once or twice on
my main PC, which runs 64-bit Debian and was using a 2.16GHz Core2Duo,
but since upgrading to a 2.6GHz Athlon II X4 I don't think I've seen
this PC exhibit the fault at all.

Hey Tony,
this is an old bug.
Could you please still reproduce this issue with newer gnome-session
version like 3.4.2.1-4 or 3.8.4-4 ?
cheers,
althaser
There have been many changes to Debian since this bug was originally
reported. If you are still experiencing this issue with Debian 13 (or
with Debian 12 or Testing or Unstable), please report a new bug.
Thank you,
