Subject: Debian Squeeze Netinst Broadcom firmware
Date: Tue, 29 Dec 2009 09:23:40 -0600
Package: Debian Squeeze Testing

Boot method: Net Install CD
Image version: AMD64 NetInstall CD on 12/27/2009
Date: 12/28/2009

Machine: Tyan Thunder K8W S2885 based system
Processor: Dual Opteron 242
Memory: 512MB ECC DDR
Partitions: None as of this point

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot: [O ]
Detect network card: [O ]
Configure network: [O ]
Detect CD: [O ]
Load installer modules: [E ]
Detect hard drives: [ ]
Partition hard drives: [ ]
Install base system: [ ]
Clock/timezone setup: [ ]
User/password setup: [ ]
Install tasks: [ ]
Install boot loader: [ ]
Overall install: [ ]

Comments/Problems:

Now the system asks to load the tigon/tg3_tso.bin firmware. (Broadcom
Network Card firmware)

I selected no and continued on the install. (Strange, did it get the
firmware from somewhere else, or was there an open source alternative,
or another driver?)

It does not indicate that there is a problem, or that the netinst will
or will not work without the firmware. Perhaps a better message saying
what requires the firmware, ex. Tigon/tg3_tso.bin firmware is required
by the Ethernet card to function properly, whether or not there is an
open source option, and the ability to use it, and whether or not the
device will work would be better.

Overall the message is very, vague to an end user, a little
clarification would be good. Also, having the firmware repository on
the netinst cd would be good, and an option to load from there. Not
being able to use the on-board network interface for a net install is
not a good point.

Hi,

the behavior of module/firmware loading was improved, see #537502.
Can you try with current installer release (squeeze rc2 [1]) and give
feedback?

Debian does not distribute non-free software on CDs and the tg3 firmware is
non-free. But Debian Installer already includes the ability to load firmware
supplied from the user (details in the installation manual).
tg3 firmware is available in the the package firmware-linux-nonfree.
