This is really strange. We got a bug report with a similar thing
(crash in evince) in the same kpse_fontmap_lookup function. It cannot
be that it is in the actual code of TL2009 since that one ships
libkpathsea5, but it seems that the format of the fontmap file has
changed and create hiccups in libkpathsea4.
Karl already answered in bug report 560097:

I checked the code and indeed libkpathsea4 as shipped with Debian does
not contain that fix.
Now the problem is that we cannot fix that in unstable anymore since
we are already at the 2009 version.
I would suggest that you rebuild ptex against libkpathsea5 which should
fix that problem, too.
Best wishes

Hi Karl, hi all,
can someone help us with getting ptex compile with the new libkpathsea5
from TeX Live 2009?
There are some undefined references I don't udnerstand because they
seem all to be defined in kpathsea/types.h, but somehow not exported
(but I am a complete ignorant in these things):

I speculate that a different (old) types.h is being read in the tex*.c
compilations, because otherwise the identifier
kpse_make_tex_discard_errors would not have survived to link time.
Mixture of old and new objects? Add -save-temps to the tex2.c gcc line
and see what types.h file the .i file is reading. gcc -E -dD has also
helped in debugging such issues (it gives you the preprocessor output
with all the #define's intact).
Hope this helps.

I guess you're right: the source package uses a stripped version of
teTeX 3.0 (using kpathsea4), reads the header files from this library
but finally tries to link to the system-kpathsea5 lib. No wonder,
that this fails....

# 1 "../../kpathsea/types.h" 1
# 26 "../../kpathsea/types.h"
, which is the header file from teTeX 3.0, i.e. kpathsea4.
I guess we have to port ptex to kpathsea5 if this is even necessary.

Ok, so it be. Then ptex has to be fixed, but that is not of my doing.
> I guess we have to port ptex to kpathsea5 if this is even necessary.
*we*? in fact the best thing would be if we could incorporate the
changes in ptex into pdftex or luatex so that it can go away. The
original company -- afair -- does not develop it anymore, so it is
only a matter of time.
Another option for ptex would be to compile kpathsea statically as
the source code is probably included.

Yes, I know. The problem is that in libkpathsea4 there is a bug that
is only triggered with loads of fonts (AFAIS).
I cannot upgrade TL2007 packages for Debian now that 2009 is already in
unstable, but the patch would be attached.
I see two options:
- build your own kpathsea4 library and link it statically, but then
apply the attached patch, otherwise it will break
- make sure that the header files in /usr/include/kpathsea/ are used
and not the ones in the package (tetex3), and link dynamically
against libkpathsea5, in this case no patch needed.
One of the two will resolve the problem (I opt for the second, if that
is possible).

By using the patch, ptex seems to work correctly.
As a workaround I attached another patch to statically link libkpathsea4.

Removing dependency on c-vararg.h, adding kpathsea/types.h and using
system libtool (which, as a result, appears to fix FTBFS on kfreebsd:
#511433) it seems to work with libkpathsea5 except that some macros
are needed, P[1-3]{C,H}, which are defined in old c-proto.h. Attached
a patch. Note that this also seems to work with new pTeX 3.1.11.

According to LowThresholdNmu I have uploaded this package

As you uploaded as "urgency=low" we'll have to wait 10 days until
this NMU enters testing. Was this intended?
Many thanks for your work!

Actually I never care for the urgency ... I once read that it should
be used to make sure that an RC bug does not enter from unstable into
testing, then Frnak told me that he used it to make sure that something
goes into testing faster than normal.
Well, so it be.
I am a bit out of my mind ATM, but does that block the texlive transistion
at the same moment? If yes, that would be a real pain.
Best wishes
Norbert

Not, I don't think so. But I guess all people using ptex from testing
will have a broken ptex installation after they upgraded their TL. I
assume both packages have to migrate to testing at the same time.

Cc'ing to Hatta-san, the maintainer of ptex-bin.

If both packages migrate to testing at the same time it's
best but I guess it is not so bad if there is some time
delay between them. And, fortunately, we know what is wrong
in this case. Thanks for your work.
However I think it is much better if a maintainer fixes
this kind of important bug so I intend to take over
ptex-bin.
I will NMUpload a new upstream version of ptex-bin within
a week and after one more week (so within January) I will
upload a new package as a new maintainer if Hatta-san
doesn't object to it.
I already participate in maintenace of xdvik-ja (xdvi for ptex)
and uploaded a new package which should fixed a similar problem.
Also I filed a similar bug to dvipsk-ja (dvips for ptex) and
dvi2ps (another dvi to ps converter for ptex/jtex).
Thanks to all for your work.
