Hi, tv_grab_uk_rt fails for me with Date::Manip complaining about the TZ which is set, eben though I've tried setting and exporting TZ to +0000 and this appears to be set in the binary itslef.
Any suggestions?

It looks like the version of libdate-manip-perl in sid is causing some
TZ-handling code in tv_grab_uk_rt to break. Specifically, the code sets the
TZ to +0000 and then checks that Date_TimeZone returns +0000. In version
6.04 of Date::Manip, it instead returns 'wet' (western european time, which
is +0000, but fails the test in xmltv).
I'm not sure if that code in xmltv is necessary, so I've queried upstream
about that. In the meantime, you can fix the problem by downgrading to the
version of libdate-manip-perl that's in testing, or by commenting out the
call to check_xmltv_tz on line 100 of /usr/bin/tv_grab_uk_rt.

I've made a small amount of progress on this problem. Basically, it seems
that the Date_ConvTZ method in the new version of Date::Manip does not
handle timezones correctly when they are specified as offsets (+/-NNNN).
It also looks like there may be issues with the way that xmltv uses
Date::Manip.
For anyone who's still having problems with xmltv on squeeze/sid, note that
downgrading to libdate-manip-perl 5.57 from lenny will fix the problem.
I've sent an update on my progress to the xmltv-devel list[0], but I'm
having to put this on hold for now.

Unfortunately, while this particular bug is fixed, there are still other
problems with Date::Manip v6. In particular, the upcoming GMT/BST switchover
is broken when using the newer Date::Manip module. See my previous message
on this bug report for more details of how far I've got so far with
resolving the issue.
For now, downgrading to the lenny version of libdate-manip-perl is the only
known fix.

I think we've finally managed to put together a workaround for this problem.
While there is still a bug in Date::Manip, it only occurs when expressing
timezones as numerical offsets (e.g. "+0000"). I've patched xmltv so that it
never uses invokes Date::Manip with timezones in that format.
I've just uploaded packages for 0.5.56+cvs20100328-1 to experimental. This
is a snapshot of today's CVS, which includes the fix. The plan is to give
this change a few days or so to get a decent bit of testing. If all goes
well, a new upstream release should follow, at which point I'll upload it to
unstable.
I'd welcome any feedback on the experimental packages if anyone can get
chance to test them, especially anyone using grabbers other than
tv_grab_uk_rt.
