Subject: gnome-power-manager: hibernation loop
Date: Mon, 2 Nov 2009 21:44:55 +0100
Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 2.28.1-2
Severity: important
I've been using gnome-power-manager successfully for a long time to hibernate my
laptop when the lid is closed. Since the last upgrade, this does not work
anymore (or it works too well!): after resuming from hibernation, the system
hibernates again after a very short delay (1 or 2 seconds). The only workaround
I've found is to switch very quickly outside of X (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and then back.
In that case, I get a warning that the system could not hibernate. Also, using
"dbus-sent" to hibernate via HAL or devicekit-power doesn't trigger this bug.
Thanks for your work and help,
didit.

Does this also happen if you purge the acpi-support package?

I can reproduce this bug. Every time I suspend the machine by shutting
the lid it re-suspends upon resume, sometimes twice (and once,
repeatedly such that I had to forcibly power off the computer).
Is there any information I can provide or testing that I can do to help
move towards a resolution of this bug?

ISTR that someone correlated this to the bluetooth daemon. Is it any
better if you stop this daemon first? Use "/etc/init.d/bluetooth stop"
for that.

Same here with suspend. Using s2ram the laptop suspends and resumes
without any problem, like a breeze.
Using g-p-m and lid closing and off we go into infinite cycles.
Sysrq-ing out is the only option.
I attach a syslog from one of those runs.
Any suggestion how to fix that?

Stopping the bluetooth daemon doesn't fix the problem here.
I've switched to using the Fn+F3 key combination to hibernate my laptop
now so this issue is not a big problem for me anymore. But thanks for
taking care of it!

That is getting more and more a pain, and g-p-m is such a stupid
program that debugging mode does not give *ANY* useful information.
Could the maintainer please comment on that matter, or give at least
suggestions how to debug that rubbish.
I found that acpi-support tries to be super-intelligent and passes the
lid close event on to g-p-m so I cannot even rely on my own scripts
using acpi because I would have to dig into the scripts of acpi-support.
Could it be that the acpi-support thing that passes on the lid close
event to g-p-m in combination with g-p-m responding by itself creates
this infinite loop?
From /etc/default/acpi-support:
#
# Suspend/hibernate method
# ------------------------
#
# When gnome-power-manager or klaptopdaemon are running, acpi-support will
# translate the suspend and hibernate keys of laptops into special "suspend"
# and "hibernate" keys that these daemons handle.
#
# Only in situations where there is no gnome-power-manager or klaptopdaemon
# running, acpi-support needs to perform suspend/hibernate in some other way.
# Beginning with version 0.122-1 acpi-support solely uses pm-utils then.
Best wishes

Subject: Bad interaction between uswsusp and pm-utils ?
Date: Sun, 27 Dec 2009 10:35:04 +0530
AIUI, g-p-m uses pm-utils to initiate suspend and resume. The Debian
package of pm-utils has a patch that uses uswsusp if it is available
(indeed, pm-utils suggests uswsusp).
I was able to fix the suspend loop by purging uswsusp and using the
kernel methods. On both my Thinkpad X60s and T61, this caused no
problem. YMMV on other laptops.

Attached is a log of
gnome-power-manager --verbose
(btw, why is it so hard to explain in a short answer that the option
--debug is not actually debugging anything?)
Still 100% reproducible.
- suspending with lid-close goes into infinite loop
- suspending with "click-power-icon", select "suspend" *works*

Removing uswsusp did help indeed.
BTW, I was exploring also some other options and found attached
patch in the suse packages. It seems to deal with very similar
things as clearing duplicate suspend events. Since it is for
2.28.0 I am not sure if it is necessary, but you might take a look
at it. Before removing uswsusp I built a package of g-p-m with
that patch added to the quilt queue and it helped a bit (only one
rogue suspend) but OTOH added something strange, namely that switching
to the console and back initiated a suspend ... Anyway, the bug report is
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=540517
I have the same warnings
devkit-power-gobject-DEBUG: DBUS timed out, but recovering
So I am not sure how uswsusp is playing into that piece, but at least
once it worked.
Best wishes

Correction: the bug still exists even after removing uswsusp. However it doesn't
occur as often. Maybe it occurs once every 10 hibernation (very rough
estimation)
while it occurred almost every time before.

Removing uswsusp finally solved it here as well. :->
The bug seems to be reported at numerous places, to me it seems like the
most accurate information is kept upstream in the g-p-m's package
bugtracker on https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=597189
I don't see any disadvantages in dropping uswsusp yet. So if this is the
proper solution pm-utils should be changed accordingly as currently it
suggests to use uswsusp, which makes it rather hard to tackle this
little bugger.
Thx,
Peter

Subject: gnome-power-manager: suspend loop on lid open
Date: Wed, 13 Jan 2010 07:36:14 -0400
Package: gnome-power-manager
Version: 2.28.1-2
Severity: normal
I get a loop with suspend as a lid action. The system just barely
comes up again, and then suspends itself. Replacing
gnome-power-manager with xfce4-power-manager makes the symptoms go
away. Killing gnome-power-manager (by keyboard interrupt) also breaks
the loop, although this is only practical when I run g-p-m from a
terminal in the foreground.

I'm not sure if these are meaningful, but just in case, here is the
debug output from gpm:

As explained in the previous comments, you need to remove uswsusp.
There will be a conflict in the next upload.

Still smells like a bug in g-p-m though. As the original bug submitter reported,
this issue still happens, just less often.
My guess is, that with uswsusp installed timing is a bit different, that's why
the bug is triggered (more often).
Adding a Conflicts might be a temporary workaround but it isn't a proper bug fix
for this issue.
Cheers,
Michael
