merc, i found a patch that makes imwheel work correctly with gpm and micewheels:
http://solaris1.mysolution.com/~jcatki/imwheel/

unfortunately the patch works fine with 1.16.0 gpm source, but bombs utterly on
the latest. gonna need some heavy hacking... i'm running a local gpm now, works
pretty well.

gpm actually does support wheelmice; however, its method of enabling the wheel
on mice is NOT DOCUMENTED anywhere. please close this bug when an adequate
README file on wheelmice has been written.

Subject: [gpm] Wheelmice are supported, documentation not really necessary.
Date: Wed, 29 Dec 2010 22:06:05 +0000
Package: gpm
Version: 1.20.4-3.3

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

I've had a look at the source for elinks (which allows the use of the scroll
wheel using GPM) and I've had a look at the source for GPM.

GPM does support wheelmice... if the application is written to take advantage
of this.

GPM these days auto configures the gpm.conf and there are no hidden options to
enable or disable wheel mice that I can see, therefore I don't think their is
anything to document (at least about wheelmice).

I think this bug can be closed.
