Hello,

after the last php update 4 or 5 days ago in testing, serendipity (version from debian testing) causes 500 errors which results from segfaults in
php5-cgi. With php-dbg I backtraced it:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

a) those segfaults are unrelated to 543525
b) the first segfault could be related to the kerberos functions, but I don't
see how the second one is related to php5 (not even via php5-gd); are you
using any custom or locally built extension?

I'm sorry, my mistake.

The installed PHP extensions linking against libkeyutils-1.2.so on my
system are imap.so (package php5-imap 5.2.6.dfsg.1-1+lenny3),
pdo_pgsql.so and pgsql.so (both package php5-pgsql 5.2.6.dfsg.1-1+lenny3).

The installed PHP extensions linking against libXdmcp.so on my system
are gd.so (package php5-gd 5.2.6.dfsg.1-1+lenny3) and imagick.so
(package php5-imagick 2.1.1RC1-1).

No custom or locally built extensions are being used.

Given I can reproduce such a segfalut, how do I generate backtraces best
on a system being used by customers?

  Micha

Package: php5-cgi
Version: 5.2.6.dfsg.1-1+lenny3
Followup-For: Bug #549492

I'm having quite frequent segfaults (1 out of 100 requests) via php5-cgi
(behind Apache2 + mod_fcgid). Traced widh php5-dbg + gbd, all traces look
the same, _zend_hash_add_or_update with arg arKey="REMOTE_ADDR" all the
time:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

Looks relevant, it's about php5-5.2.6.dfsg.1 and fails on hashing
REMOTE_ADDR key with bogus value size. Although this one fails in a
'apache2' SAPI whereas my bugreport was about CGI SAPI in FastCGI
context.

this has to be the single most annoying issue left in lenny's php
but we haven't had a great deal of success in tracking it down.

i have no idea of it's significant, but nDataSize seems kinda big for
what ought to be an address (assuming that's the size of the object
being inserted/updated).  also, 32767 == 2^15-1 == INT16_MAX (always a
point of interest when you see an integer near a limit at crash-time),
but again don't know if it's relevant.

are you at all able to reproduce the issue with a simple script (or perhaps
by a second script which loops around calling the first until it crashes?)

thanks,

Good news,

I have been able to suppress all my php5-cgi segfaults, I simply
installed the 'php5-suhosin' package, reloaded Apache, and done (Lenny
AMD64, up-to-date).

The backtraces above suggests that the suhosin_patch tries to log some
security violation information and lookup some PHP internals which do
not seem to be reachable at this point, like the REMOTE_ADDR env used to
log the client IP address. Maybe the Suhosin module is vital to setup
its security log or something like that (sorry for being vague, I'm
talking about intuitions...)

Installing php5-suhosin is not as transparent as the doc suggests. I
tought this module would only act as a gateway to tune the suhosin_patch
which is already built into PHP5 SAPIs. And not change its behaviour
upon installation since all parameters in /etc/php5/conf.d/suhosin are
commented out.

But for instance, on servers where safe_mode=off, the
suhosin.memory_limit=0 takes effect uppon php5-suhosin installation and
suddenly scripts cannot raise the memory_limit barrier with ini_set().
Maybe I misread the doc, I was a bit in a hurry.

> are you at all able to reproduce the issue with a simple script (or

Sorry, nope. I tried a few snippets on a server which should be
impacted by this problem but could not have PHP segfault. I can hardly
use xdebug on the platform I just fixed, it's very busy and uses a
custom and complex PHP framework, I d'ont expect to get any interesting
trace there.

Hint: my impacted platforms were Etch systems dist-upgraded to Lenny.
I'm not sure if it's specific to this criterion, but maybe it's worth
mentioning.

After having read your comment I've installed php5-suhosin on my server
too (Lenny, AMD64, up-to-date), but still got today some php5-cgi
segmentation faults:

Oct 30 11:21:28 kunden-www kernel: [410275.967073] php-cgi[8559]:
segfault at 7f0d4adc7ed0 ip 7f0d4adc7ed0 sp 40a38128 error 14 in

libpam.so.0.81.12[7fd444d03000+b000]

Are the segmentation faults I experience something different? How can I
find out?

Regards
  Micha

P.S.: I don't know if it matters: I'm running PHP wrapped by suphp.

I don't really know. I can give more details on how I got a stack
trace from gdb on a production server, using Apache2 + mod_fcgid and
php5-cgi (with no disturbance):

  # aptitude install php5-dbg

I use the 'FCGIWrapper /usr/local/bin/php5-fcgi .php' directivein my
Apache conf and this wrapper looks like:

  #!/bin/sh
  export PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN=0
  export PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS=10000
  gdb -x /tmp/run /usr/bin/php5-cgi 2>&1 | logger -t php5-cgi
-puser.info

Where /tmp/run is a dumb script to make gdb automatically run,
backtrace, then quit:

  # cat /tmp/run
  run
  bt
  quit

  Output appears in /var/log/user.log.

of my wordpress sites. i see the following in my syslog:

are we assuming that this is the same problem? in any event, a backtrace
will be necessary, ideally along with some code that we can use to
reproduce it.

thanks,

Could you please (instead of useless Shakespeare quotations) provide:

- your system information (f.e. output of "reportbug --template
libapache2-mod-php5")

- your list of php5 modules installed (and preferrably list of their
dependencies as well)

- install php5-dbg and get proper backtrace
(/usr/share/doc/apache2.2-common/README.backtrace)

You didn't run that on the computer which has libapache2-mod-php5
installed. It's missing package dependencies. Could you re-run that
command on the server where you have your php5-cgi (and cherokee)
installed, and run it over php5-cgi. The output should include
something like this:

Versions of packages php5-cgi depends on:
ii libbz2-1.0 1.0.5-4 high-quality block-sorting file co
[...more libraries...]
ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3 compression library - runtime

Could you provide list of dependencies for at least php5-mysql? (Ie.
run reportbug --template php5-mysql)

So, why did you install libapache2-mod-php5, which is module for apache2.2?

Have you even tried to use google? Typing "php cgi backtrace" turns into:

i found the segfault was related to libc, so i updated that package
and the other dependencies of php-cgi, and that seems to have fixed
the segfaults.

so, php-cgi is still segfaulting, even with all package dependencies

We still need the backtrace. Without a backtrace your report is almost useless.

i just can't figure out how to do that. i've spent a considerable
amount of time trying, but all the methods seem to assume either that
i'm running apache, or that i know what is triggering the crash so i
can hand-run php-cgi, and i don't. the problem is that it's a
production server, and the segfaults happen with allot of time between
them, with an unknown trigger. all i can tell you is that the hardware
is healthy, and all the packages are updated. i'll just continue to
update and hope the problem is caught elsewhere.

yes, thanks. if you don't have the php5-dbg package installed,
installing it may put even more info in the backtrace too.

well, on the bright side the segfaulting seems to be in the shutdown
code, so i'm guessing that the pages are still getting served, right? :)

how about the output of "bt full" instead of just "bt"?

at this point i can suggest taking one of two actions:

1) isolate the code which causes the segfault, and try to get it
narrowed down to something which could be reproduced outside of
your app. it could also be that it's not specific code but a
race condition that only happens every X requests. if you could
even reproduce it like that it'd be a good datapoint.

2) reporting the bug to bugs.php.net, though you should be prepared
to try a nightly snapshot for them to take your report seriously.

but of course, there's also,

3) do nothing and wait to see if it gets fixed on its own.

Subject: Closing segfaults (and some other minor bugs) for version older than squeeze (5.3.3)
Date: Wed, 27 Apr 2011 10:28:24 +0200
Version: 5.3.3-7

Hi,

since lenny is oldstable it will not get any updates now (except
security)[1], I am closing all segfault bugs filled against php5 in
lenny. (This is kind of saying that we don't care much about php5 in
lenny anymore).

If you believe the bug is still there, please provide evidence[2] and
a (preferably complete) test case with up-to-date squeeze (and/or
testing or unstable) version of php5 and reopen the bug.

O.
1. http://wiki.debian.org/PHP#Notes_on_PHP_and_security
2. Install php5-dbg and provide backtrace:
