Subject: ftp.debian.org: please help me prepare an official repository for deltas
Date: Mon, 28 Sep 2009 11:50:35 +0200
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

hi,

I am the author of the "debdelta" package. For some
years I have been running an infrastructure that sets
up some repositories of "deltas" that can be used by
"debdelta-upgrade" to speed up upgrades and/or
reduce bandwidth usage (currently for amd64 and i386, and
for stable-security, testing and unstable ;
TODO is stable-updates and experimental ).

Currently these repositories are created
by an engine in a host of mine, and then rsync-ed
into www.bononia.it and are publicly available as
 http://www.bononia.it/debian-security-deltas
 http://www.bononia.it/debian-deltas
and the sizes are 5GB and 15GB respectively.

In the years "debdelta" has matured.
It would be nice and useful if it
may be offered as an official Debian service.

I open this bug report as a place to start a
discussion on this subject.

This is a proposal, in 3 stages.

1) Create a DNS entry such as 'debdelta.debian.net'
 or 'debdelta.debian.org'
(for a start , we may set it as CNAME
to the current server , that is www.bononia.it )

2) Set up an official public repository of deltas.
I have two proposals for this,
2a) Set up a space in a www host that the Debian
     project administers
2b) Create a new directory "deltas"
     in the ftp.debian.org structure (alongside
     "dists" "pool" "tool" ... ) .
For a start, I may keep it up-to date using my engine
and rsync (or whatever tool you prefer).

3) Set up the engine that creates the deltas
in a host inside Debian; not necessarily the same host as in
 (2) ; it has to be an host that contains the whole
repository , and an additional space for keeping
old versions of the debs, that are needed to create deltas
 (I keep ~30GB of those).

Thanks for your attention so far.

That might be nice. Is ftpmaster interested in doing that?

15 gig doesn't sound like a lot. How much churn is there however? I.e.
how much data changes in between each mirrorrun?

The main reason I would like to see this get included in ftp.d.o, if
feasible, is that I would prefer to avoid having to setup a *fourth*
mirror network.

A single host cannot provide the availability requirements we would put
on this, and we already have ftp.d.o, security, and volatile, who are in
various states of brokenness. Adding yet another mirrornet can't be
good.

you need one delta to cover one possible upgrade of a .deb file

that is, whenever a .deb version changes in a 'release' , there should
be one delta for it ; where currently 'release'='unstable','testing'
and arch=i386,amd64

that is, whenever a newer version of a .deb package enters in unstable,
a delta is created ; and whenever it transition into testing, you may
need a delta for that as well (it depends if the previous version in
unstable had transitioned into testing or not)

currently, on average, a delta is 26% of the original deb
(note that the engine removes any delta that is >70% of the original deb)

so if we would create a delta for all architectures, we would expect
that the traffic to keep mirrors up-to-date would raise by +26%

a lot more info can be found in
http://tonelli.sns.it/pub/mennucc1/debdelta/
for example, each run on the mirror generates a log file in
http://tonelli.sns.it/pub/mennucc1/debdelta/run/log/

of course, by the same reasoning, if people would use deltas to upgrade
their system, then the traffic generated by people on the mirrors would
decrease to roughly 1/3rd of the current traffic

we may then mirror the 'deltas' directory only to primary mirror sites,
and not to secundary ; the rationale being that the traffic by users
downloading the deltas is lower (as I already told in the other email)
so there may be no need to use secondary mirrors

dear all,

I manage the debdelta service; I would like to integrate the delta
generation inside a Debian infrastructure: indeed my current server does
not manage it anymore gracefully (and also some upcoming family business
... keep an eye on d-private in June).

In the past I had some nice conversation in Sep 2010 with Joerg (hi!),
and also with some people inside bug http://bugs.debian.org/548709 ; and
with Zack (hi!) who suggested I should contact you.

I have looked around, into DAK a bit.

My current idea is: I may setup a generation server into ries.d.o , to
see if/how it works. Would this be fine?
ries.d.o seems a good choice, since it contains a copy of all the data
in ftp-master.d.o .

I need some help in these respects.

(1) the morgue is not copied into ries.d.o ; debdelta needs it, it needs
the old version of a deb to create the delta : may you please change
/home/dak/syncdd.sh in ries.d.o so that the morgue is copied (or at
least the last two months of it...)

(2) can I access r/o the postgres db of dak in ries.d.o ? how?

After that, I will look into it more, and come back with further ideas.

Thanks in advance

a.

dear all,

currently I generate deltas on a desktop PC, with an external USB disk
for holding the mirror; this is not working well (the USB disk does not
stand up to the job, it needs power cycle every few days); so the
debdelta service is erratic; please help me move it onto some hw

Hi all,
I am a user of debdelta and am interested to see if this comes to
fruition, it would make lot of people's update/upgrade lives easier.

My personal experience with debdelta has been it makes upgrades take
lot less than even 1/3rd of the bandwidth that A Menucc has been
talking about. For e.g. if I take the recent updates in wheezy (about
the various rebuilds with xz compression) then it took less than 10
minutes to upgrade almost 200 MB of upgrades and using somewhere
between 10-15 of real downloads. I think that the ftp-master team
should not just take into account just the bandwidth costs but also
time costs (as the time difference between just downloading the deltas
and downloading the upgrades etc.)

Looking forward to integration of the same in an official repository
(which might jumpstart people into doing the bit of integration of the
debdelta service/command into apt itself.)

Just my 2 paise.

dear all

let me add that currently deltas are served thru ftp.linux.it
(and they were very kind to offer that space)

but nowadays ftp.linux.it is often down, and this is severely damaging
the service

so it would be nice if the project may at least offer a web server....

Hi,

I can assist you integrating debdelta into ftp-master (or other
services, if hosting on ftp-master turns to be problematic).
Is there any documentation available, so I can start figuring out what
could be needed in order for debdelta to work?

hi and really thanks,

The debdelta service is presented in
http://debdelta.debian.net/

There is also detailed documentation in that page as well.

Note that the way my server generates deltas is probably not apt to DAK.
I had started looking into it. There may be some steps , please see

Hi again.

Currently though I would need a web site where to publish the deltas.
Indeed deltas are distributed thru in debdeltas.debian.net that nowadays
is an alias for ftp.linux.it , but that site is often down or
disconnected from the net, hence I need a new one. The server that
generates the deltas pushes them into debdeltas.debian.net using rsync .
The deltas are ± 10GB of data.

Would it be possible to host the deltas somewhere inside the Debian
infrastructure ?
