Package: php5
Severity: wishlist
An excellent replacement for the (now old / ageing) php5-cgi package. LiteSpeed SAPI is now officially supported and included from php-5.3.0 and greater.
So its possible to make a start on this in experimental since we have 5.3.0 in debian/experimental...

Eh, replacement which needs (commercial) closed source product?
I don't know what other php maintainers think, but I am not in favor
(in fact I am opposed to) packaging some proprietary SAPI, which you
cannot test without installing some closed source webserver.

I don't see any reason why we would build and *support* a SAPI for a
proprietary web server while we have other SAPIs that could be enabled for
free web servers that are packaged in Debian.

One of the .c files has another licence but doesn't say anything about dual
licencing.

This doesn't exist on Debian's BTS. Please read the documentation.

As far as i can see, there's nothing in the LiteSpeed sapi that
prevents it from being used with any of Debian's free web servers.

I apologise if the licensing link provided was out-of date. If you
look in the php sources, you can see there is a double-license in each
source file there. One php license + the Litespeed bsd license. Sorry
I am no licensing expert, however the license seems permissive enough.
Litespeed's license looks to be a non-conflicting BSD license.

How? Are there any other free web servers with LiteSpeed interface?
Quick Google search showed nothing.

It should be true that any web server who understand the Fast-CGI
protocol, can communicate with the litespeed PHP sapi. And / or any
other fast-CGI sapi.
You are correct to say as I have misunderstood their use of the term
Fast-CGI in the documentation. Actually i just compiled it and can now
say for sure that the Lightspeed SAPI isn't compatible with the
FastCGI standard. So allright to reject this at the moment.
However just to speculate here are 3 possible future situations.
1) Some webservers might informally adopt this litespeed protocol (if
the performance claims of litespeed are true). However other
webservers may not. For example there could be an nginx module and not
an apache one.
2) The FPM FastCGI sapi is eventually approved / released and is made
available by PHP. This would make for a reasonable alternative to the
litespeed sapi.
3) The litespeed team and / or php team decide to improve or fork the
Litespeed sapi for some kind of FCGI compatability mode. This might be
a forked (ie seperated sapi). Or otherwise it could be the same
lightspeed sapi.
Hopefully we can find a better solution that meets with the high
expectations and the debian standards.

litespeed != fastcgi.

It is called a SAPI for a reason, were they fully compatible they wouldn't be
two different SAPIs.

None of which is of our interest as the code and the server are in Debian
main.

You first need a problem before you can try to find a solution for it.

You are wrong here. The php team generally do not want to replace the
old fcgi sapi. It would cause too many issues not to keep the old one
available. Even if the a SAPI were also fgci - compliant, it would
still be a different sapi. Its been discussed already.

I don't fully understand that sentence, but i believe these things
shouldn't be dismissed out-of-hand. Generally all users want to be
able to serve php faster, with a lower memory overhead and optimize
server performance. It costs money to run servers after all. This is
something that impacts not just for the big companies, but for
everyone who runs a php server. Why deprive many users of this and
without a reasonable cause?
Clearly these options aren't here yet. But they will be coming along
so its clearly something to think about and plan ahead for. I'm sorry,
however currently with these type of closed response it becomes
impossible to include Debian to make a good plan for anything
worthwhile here.

I don't understand it either, but what I mean was that none of those possible
futures are of our interest as long as a server supporting it is not in
Debian main.

It is not; we don't have enough man power to properly and timely support php
in {old,,un}stable. If there was enough man power we could consider enabling
the roxen and cadium SAPIs as those servers are in Debian and there have been
requests to enable them (at least for roxen, I don't remember about cadium).

We are not depriving anything from anyone, that's the beauty of FOSS, you are
free to do it.

php5-fpm is available in debian from 5.3.5-1, thus closing this bug.
