Subject: ATI Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF doesn't start with linux-image-2.6.30-1-686
Date: Sat, 15 Aug 2009 02:26:13 +0200
Package: linux-image-2.6.30-1-686
Version: 2.6.30-5
Severity: important

Hi, after installing linux-image-2.6.30-1-686, Xorg (ATI Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF) doesn't start, freezing both monitor and keyboard.

(The system is only accessible by remote (ssh), just in case someone with the same problem wants to reboot or shutdown the system properly).

I don't know which logs or info are the most useful to you to handle this bug, so don't hesitate to ask.

In the meantime:

The kernel DRM (3D acceleration) driver for Rage 128 requires a firmware
file which is in the firmware-linux package. Installing that package
should fix the problem.

However, the driver is supposed to fail gracefully in the absence of the
firmware file. Since I modified the driver to use external firmware, I
will look into why this is not working as I intended.

This is enough for me to start investigating.

In effect, you're right. Installing firmware-linux package solves the problem.

Thank you.

This actually appears to be an existing bug which could occur in case of
any initialisation failure.

Please could you test my attempted fix:

1. Download http://womble.decadent.org.uk/tmp/r128.ko
(there is a GPG signature for this in
    http://womble.decadent.org.uk/tmp/r128.ko.asc )
2. Uninstall firmware-linux
3. Stop the X server
4. Load the new driver (rmmod r128 && insmod r128.ko)
5. Start the X server

Ben.

I'm afraid I'm addressing the 'classic' problem -> insmod: error
inserting 'r128.ko': -1 Invalid module format.

# gcc -v
gcc version 4.3.3 (Debian 4.3.3-14)

# cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.30-1-686 (Debian 2.6.30-5) (maks@debian.org) (gcc
version 4.3.3 (Debian 4.3.3-15) )

Any suggestion? Thank you in advance.

Unfortunatley it doesn't work either (unless I'm doing something wrong).

It's not supposed to work - the point was to test that the modified
driver will not crash or hang if firmware is missing.

This looks like the driver now behaves as intended. Did the X server
restart successfully?

This is expected - after a reboot you are loading the old unfixed
module.

Here's the patch I applied to build the modified module referenced

That's right, but I've been playing in another testing PC, putting
your new r128 module in
/lib/modules/2.6.30-1-686/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/r128/ (to avoid the
old one) and doesn't work either.

Can you send the X server log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log)?
