Hi,
I thought I give it a shot and tried to build ghc-6.10.4 on ia64. In the

Maybe this gives a debugging clue?

I debugged it some more, adding putStrLn’s in various locations. It
seems it crashes when parsing the packages files, which lead me to the
hypothesis that the problem is related to the happy-generated-files.
These files are generated by upstream with -agc. I re-generated them
without any special options, and the problem changed a bit: Instead of a
strange closure type, I now get a segmentation fault, but at the same
position:
Starting program: /home/nomeata/ghc6/ghc6-6.10.4/ghc/stage2-inplace/libexec/ghc -B/home/nomeata/ghc6/ghc6-6.10.4/inplace-datadir/. -dynload wrapped ~/test.hs -o ~/test

I don’t know where to continue from here (and it’s too late), but maybe
someone else has a nice idea now.
BTW, is there a corresponding upstream bug? I didn’t find one.

Good news, that version compiled ok. I'm ready to guess that 6.12 is
likely to work too, then. Its release is scheduled to happen well
before the Debian freeze. I'm not going to try to backport whatever
fixed this to 6.10.
Please don't remove ghc6 on ia64 from unstable. ghc6 has a
Build-Depends on ghc6 and the current 6.8.2 on ia64 is sufficient for
building 6.12.
Something that would help to keep ghc6 in a working state on ia64
would be to commit a computer as a build slave, as detailed in
http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/wiki/BuildBot
But I don't know if that's a justifiable use of resources.

would dropping ghc6/ia64 from testing be still acceptable? that
would potentially allow ghc 6.10.x to testing for the rest of archs.

perhaps someone at the ia64 list can provide such machine.
I can probably provide a arm(el) buildbot machine if someone can
host it.

this question was not answered yet (and I’m not sure if it was directed
to the release team, the haskell team or the ia64 guys). I’d be in favor
of that step. It would make
http://release.debian.org/migration/testing.pl?package=ghc6
give better hints as to what is to do besides waiting for ghc6 on ia64.

Cheers
Luk
