Hi,

Several weeks ago I also noticed that my machine does not execute the
screensaver any longer. In fact, it does not automatically power off
the screen either. So, if I want to switch it off, I have to do it
manually using xrandr :(

I've noticed the same thing. I usually use a ROX desktop managed by
ROX-Session instead of GNOME. When I tried a more standard GNOME desktop
the screensaver appeared to work correctly. When starting
gnome-screensaver in ROX-Session I get this message:

** (gnome-screensaver:3595): WARNING **: Failed to get session presence proxy: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SessionManager': no such name

So I think gnome-screensaver now depends on gnome-session. I hope this
can be reverted because the combo of gnome-screensaver and
gnome-power-manager is more flexible for laptops thanxscreensaver.

I don't see why this bug doesn't have a status of grave.
The package is unusable.  There was another bug filed
with a title of 'Idle time not honored' or some such, and
it was closed with a note that it is fixed in unstable and
maybe a note about gnome-session but no explanation as to 
what the original problem was or where the fix is or what 
it looks like (single or multiple patch?  multiple package
upgrades?  Total gnome-session infrastructure rewrite?)

This has been broken for some time and it would be nice
to know a little bit more about what is going on with 
respect to getting it functional.

I solved that bug: the thing is that on debian testing fresh install the
version of it is:
Package: gnome-screensaver
Version: 2.26.1-1 while gnome-session package and gnome-settings-daemons ar of
older versions.

Fix:

Install gnome-sessions and gnome-settings-daemon the same version as gnome-screensaver
I did it from Sid packages and istalled 2.26.. versions of those three..

After reboot all works fine...

I have this problem too.  It activates if I do it manually with
    gnome-screensaver-command --activate
but never activates automatically when the computer is idle.
I have to do "xset dpms ..." to get any kind of screen blanking at all,
even though these are set in "Power Savings" also.

I installed the version from unstable, and it actually worked for a minute,
I locked the screen with it set to 'random' and 'Dangerball' came up, then

It doesn't work for me using the button, waiting for timeout or
using the command directly.  The screen blanks, and locks, but
