Bug#535534; Package gnome-settings-daemon.

Message #3 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: gnome-settings-daemon
Version: 2.26.1-2
Severity: normal
Several times recently, I've had all GTK+ programs suddenly start using the
wrong theme, and I discovered that gnome-settings-daemon had crashed due to an
X error. From ~/.xsession-errors:
The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.

Hi,
I can confirm this problem, it happens about every other time for me:
The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
(Details: serial 2563 error_code 8 request_code 20 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Starting gnome-settings-daemon manually afterwards usually works.
I’m using xmonad as my window manager, if that makes a difference.
Thanks,
Joachim

I am running a fresh install of squeeze here. Problem appears most often
when opening a browser (iceweasel 4.0 from mozilla.debian.net). Running
gnome-settings-daemon manually afterwards works. I am using
gnome-session with xmonad set as window manager.

I can confirm that the problem is still there in Squeeze (same error
message as mentioned above by Wendy Elmer). It happens to me every now
and then after booting and autologging to gnome with compiz.
Logging out and logging in again solves the problem.
Maybe it is related to the gnome session autostarted programs : zim,
iceweasel and thunderbird (installed from mozilla site binary tarball :
I'm not using icedove since I want 3.1.x release)

I have also observed gnome-settings-daemon to keel over with a
BadMatch error:

This probably reflects a bug in the program.

In my case, I can most reliably make it appear by running the 'pan'
newsreader. About one time in three, gnome-settings-daemon will die as soon
as 'pan's main window appears.
I have 'pan' package version 0.133-1.1 installed. My window manager
is awesome 3.4.9-1.1.

This happens to me on i686 / sid. It also happened with the wheezy version.
I tried compiling gnome-settings-daemon for debugging and running it with
--no-daemon --sync under gdb with a breakpoint set at gdk_x_error but for
some reason it did not actually stop for a backtrace when it crashed. It
seems much harder to get gnome-settings-daemon to crash when compiled and
running in this way :-) and so I had to wait a couple of days. I'll let you
know if I find any more info.
