I guess, I triggered the same bug. KVM 84+dfsg-2 starts Win XP with
kernel linux-image-2.6.28-1-686 successfully, but with
linux-image-2.6.29-2-686 or linux-image-2.6.30-1-686 the XP boot seems
to halt, when the Windows XP boot logo should appear.

I encountered the same bug. KVM 85+dfsg-4 appears to fail when switching to
VGA while using the KVM modules. Disabling the modules results in a successful
boot.

I downgraded KVM to 72+dfsg-5 and everything works as expected.

I have successfully created and used a winxp sp1 (ie as received on CD)
version under kvm 85. It was at the point of upgrade to sp2 that it
failed. Downgrading to kvm 72 allowed this upgrade to proceed to
completion.

Subject: Workaround to the issue
Date: Tue, 13 Oct 2009 13:55:11 +0100
I found a work around thanks to some googling and seeing the
bug in ubuntu

The KVM needs the -nx flag to allow it to work. You can achieve this
with the following steps

create the file /etc/libvirt/qemu/kvm-32 with the following contents

#!/bin/bash
exec kvm -cpu qemu32,-nx `echo $*`

and make it executable.

In the same directory you should find the xml file for your virtual
machine. In my case it was called windows.xml

Inside that file there is a line

<emulator>/usr/bin/kvm</emulator>

change it to

<emulator>/etc/libvirt/qemu/kvm-32</emulator>

You will need to restart libvirt-bin

/etc/init.d/libvirt-bin restart

and then the virtual machine can be started and windows runs fine.

Thanks Alan,

your work-around works for me! Windows XP starts now under kvm
85+dfsg-4.1.

Alas I have a new problem now, that xvnc4viewer (4.1.1+X4.3.0-31) fails with
"Rect too big", when I try to connect:

$ vncviewer localhost:0

VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.1 for X - built Jan 30 2009 19:33:16
Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd.
See http://www.realvnc.com for information on VNC.

Wed Oct 14 14:28:31 2009
CConn: connected to host localhost port 5900
CConnection: Server supports RFB protocol version 3.8
CConnection: Using RFB protocol version 3.8
TXImage: Using default colormap and visual, TrueColor, depth 24.
CConn: Using pixel format depth 6 (8bpp) rgb222
 CConn: Using ZRLE encoding
Rect too big: 11822x7709 at 3824,1 exceeds 1280x1024
 main: Rect too big

But that is another problem, generally it works with the build-in vncviewer of
virt-manager, or with xvnc4viewer when I run the guest XP with 1024x768 instead
of 1280x1024.

kind regards,
oz

You filled the bug http://bugs.debian.org/533853 in Debian BTS
against the package kvm. I'm closing it at *unstable*, but it will
remain open for older distributions.

For more information about this package's removal, read
