Description : Libraries for accessing Sony HiMD MiniDisc Walkman (not to be confused with NetMD and libnetmd)

libhimd is part of our project linux-minidisc which is intented to bring full minidisc support to Linux without
any DRM-restrictions like the original Windows software. The library provides functionality to both upload and
download audio tracks from HiMD devices with a USB-connector.

Work is still in-progress, up for now upload (transfer from the Walkman to the PC) of MP3s and unencrypted PCM-tracks
is possible. Near future will bring upload of unencrypted ATRAC3 tracks and download of MP3s to the Walkman.

Support for encrypted tracks requires much more investigation has already made alot of progress in reverse engineering
of the original software. We expect full HiMD support in one year from now.

PS: We are also working together with the original authors of libnetmd to revive that project again, add actual download-
functionality and also bring the package back to Debian.

Adrian

Hello,

I am writing this message just to assure that the project is still
going strong and we have been making alot progress recently. However,
we still don't feel that the software is mature enough for being
packaged for Debian. The main reason is that the HiMD libraries (libhimd)
are still subject to frequent changes so that we cannot yet provide a
stable release.

Since the idea is to keep the library libhimd split from the GUI
application "qhimdtransfer" with the help of a dynamically linked
library, we would eventually end up in dozens of .so.XX versions of
the library due to the frequent changes.

We therefore ask for some more patience. However, anybody is always
free to pull the latest code from git and build and run the software
on Debian. Build instructions specifically for Debian can be found in
our wiki.

Regards,

Adrian

Subject: PPA packages available for testing
Date: Sat, 28 Nov 2009 10:51:11 +0100
Hello,

to test the first versions of the package, I have created a
prelimenary package called "qhimdtransfer". QHiMDTransfer is the GUI
tool to interact with the libhimd library. As for now, I have linked
the library statically to "qhimdtransfer". Once we have reached a
first stable milestone, we will provide a dynamically linked version
which will be eventually uploaded to Debian.

For now, the PPA packages can be found on my launchpad site:

<https://launchpad.net/~glaubitz/+archive/linux-minidisc>

We are looking for people to create translations. Please get in touch
in case you're interested.

Hi,

I have uploaded a current version to mentors.debian.net. The software
still doesn't have the full functionality but I hope I can get more
people join us to accelerate development. There is alot of stuff which
is already understand but just lacks implementation.

Here is the repository for mentors.debian.net:

noowner 533112
thanks

Hi,

This is an automatic email to change the status of libhimd back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 6 months.

If you are still interested in adopting libhimd, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

retitle 533112 ITP: libhimd -- Libraries for accessing Sony HiMD MiniDisc Walkman (not to be confused with NetMD and libnetmd)
 owner 533112 !
 thanks

However, it is not recommended to keep ITP for a long time without acting on
the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from
packaging that software. It is also a good idea to document your progress on
this ITP from time to time, by mailing <533112@bugs.debian.org>.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,

Hi,

I have consolidated this ITP together with #571647 and #638968
into the new ITP for the source package linux-minidisc [1]
and I am therefore closing this ITP.

Cheers,

Adrian
