Subject: rhythmbox: Doesn't see ipod if it's in fstab
Date: Wed, 10 Jun 2009 10:59:17 -0500
Package: rhythmbox
Version: 0.12.1-1
Severity: normal
This is mysterious. In my fstab, I used to have:
/dev/disk/by-id/usb-Apple_iPod_[[blah]]-0:0-part2 /ipod vfat rw,user,noauto 0 5
I'd plug my ipod in, type mount /ipod as my regular user, and there we
go.
rhythmbox completely refused to see it.
I unmounted and unplugged the ipod. I commented out that line in
fstab. Plugged it in, and clicked on the "recently connected" button
in KDE 4. THEN rhythmbox saw it. I have no idea why the difference.
Also, do have gnome-volume-manager installed as documented in README.Debian.

Since the migration to gio, rhythmbox apparently needs devices to be
already mounted *in gvfs* to see it. However, I don’t know of a daemon
that can do the job apart from nautilus. This is a design issue that
affects non-GNOME users quite badly. This is probably not something we
can fix at the Debian level, so I suggest that you talk about it with
upstream.
> Also, do have gnome-volume-manager installed as documented in README.Debian.
Thanks for the notice, as this is outdated; gnome-volume-manager still
handles some devices, but not the mountable ones, which are in the hands
of nautilus. I’ll fix the document.

I'm running KDE 4, and once I removed it from fstab, it seemed to work
fine. Amarok also wouldn't auto-detect it if it was in fstab, but it
let me manually specify it, unlike rhythmbox.

I have no idea where the right place to do this is, or how to do so...
can you forward this report, CCing me, or help out in some way?

Hmmm that may be different from what I thought, then. Is gvfsd running
when this happens? (In the case it works, and in the case it does not.)
Same question about gvfs-hal-volume-monitor.

That would be either the RB mailing list or the GNOME bugzilla, but
let’s make sure this is not a gvfs problem before.

Yes, apparently both have been running since yesterday. I logged in
yesterday, so it's hard to say what started them. I didn't start them
manually, that's for sure.

That's why I wanted to check with you first. I have a history of
reporting a bug, and it being flagged INVALID because it's a bug in some
obscure library someplace.

OK, let’s add this to the countless issues of gvfs/gio with fstab
entries.
(Let me warn you that so far, no one in Debian seems really motivated to
understand what is broken, let alone propose solutions.)
Cheers,
