Package: linux-image-2.6.30-rc8-amd64
Version: 2.6.30~rc8-1~experimental.1~snapshot.13724
Severity: normal

Since upgrading from rc5 to rc8, the volume levels of my soundcard
output are so low that I cannot hear anything anymore, even with all
the jogs yanked to 100%.

This is possibly related to commit
b452e08e73c0e3dbb0be82130217be4b7084299e, which hit rc6. Thanks to
Mark Brown for his help.

Very strangely, after a failed s2ram suspend-resume cycle, it now
works. Before that, reboots wouldn't repair it.

I upgraded from 2.6.26 to 2.6.30-1-amd64 kernel (debian unstable) and
I also found out my sound levels are ridiculously low when volume
maxed to 100%.

However I searched for solution and I have found a workaround:

In alsamixer, if you scroll to the right, there are four sliders "Via
DXS" - in my case they were all on zero. Once I put them all to 100%,
volume levels returned back to reasonable values (same as before the
bug).

So I guess these four DXS levels are probably incorrectly rememebered
or incorrectly reset.

Try raising these Via DXS sliders as a workaround till this is fixed properly.

I tried this workaround with poor results. If I crank the first of
those four mixer levels all the way up and turn the volume of my
speakers all the way up, I can hear something. But it's nowhere near
reasonable. The other three levels have no effect.

I have a VIA MII10000 with this sound chip:

00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)

I also did a diff of kernel messages between 2.6.26 and 2.6.30. Here is
the relevant section:

+VIA 82xx Audio 0000:00:11.5: PCI INT C -> Link[LNKC] -> GSI 5 (level, low) -> IRQ 5
VIA 82xx Audio 0000:00:11.5: VIA VLink IRQ fixup, from 9 to 5
-PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:02:00.0 to 64
+VIA 82xx Audio 0000:00:11.5: setting latency timer to 64
