"/usr/share/doc/x11-common/examples/xsession" and this file is nowhere
to be found.

Could you have a look at this bug/wiki-page.

The user wanted to autostart a program when the session is opened. I
know that Gnome conforms to freedesktop[1]  ~/.config/autostart/* but I
don't know about others WM, like xmonad.
