Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: libgl1-mesa-dri Version: 7.4-2 Severity: important Since upgrading to 7.4, glxgears, blender and others 3D apps, always redraw on top of everything, ignoring window stacking. 2D apps are still there, just their on screen pixels have been overwritten and a redraw must be forced to appear (select text or scroll, eg). There is no composite manager running. I would try to show the artifacts, but screen captures do not show OpenGL apps, just black or data from 2D apps (again, before upgrade, capturing was possible with simple tools like ImageMagick's import). Plain Sawfish, and yes, it happens with twm too. It works when using software OpenGL (for example two X sessions, the second one fall backs to SW rasterizer). GSR

ps wuax | grep [x]compmgr -> nothing. If I run the command myself, bug
happens anyway. What is more, it happens when running xcompmgr -c and
things are worse, the shadow is left over other windows so it is like
if the system also forgot the 3D window and associated shadow passed
over a zone and thus had to be refreshed (it does not happen with
shadow from a xterm, for example).
> I notice Option "GARTSize" "128" in your X configuration - does the

Yes. I removed all options except SubPixelOrder (none). Funny side
note: then it says using unsupported XAA and that I should use
EXA... in any case it does not matter about the 3D bug. I have been
trying both EXA and XAA in config file explicitly, so when it
complained, I assumed it was an old printf about forcing XAA (Firefox
scrolling is slightly faster with the "unsupported" XAA with "render
accel disabled" than with EXA; around FFv2 times it was clearly
faster).
I have been also trying other 3D apps, like Supertuxkart, and found
out the one running via PLib/SDL does not cause stacking issues, just
that in screenshots I get black pixels in zones covered by other
windows and the 3D content in non covered parts. STK from SVN does not
use SDL anymore... and the full bug appears.

With GART setting removed, I can see in /var/log/Xorg.5.log it selects

Yeah, these are the longstanding issues between Composite and the traditional DRI, which will be fixed with DRI2. > Funny side note: then it says using unsupported XAA and that I should use > EXA... With that glxgears just prints: ---8<--- Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual --->8--- Blender fails too: ---8<--- GHOST_WindowX11.cpp:177: X11 glxChooseVisual() failed for OpenGL, verify working openGL system! X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) Major opcode of failed request: 18 (X_ChangeProperty) Resource id in failed request: 0xb6f9a020 Serial number of failed request: 29 Current serial number in output stream: 30 --->8--- But STK from SVN (the non Plib/SDL version) works, and windows over it are not covered! It just reports: ---8<--- Level 1: No doublebuffering available. --->8--- Screen captures of this STK show the 3D zone, with 2D windows over it as plain black rectangles. FPS stats are even better than before by 10 or so frames (or maybe just coincidence... the important is that speed is not a lot worse). There is also a 2D app that causes black zones in similar fashion than 3D ones (its pixels which are covered by others appear as black). It is a xterm with colour log and some settings in wm to put it below others and non focusable. The interesting part is that if the covering window is just 3D, the 3D info appears fine in the screenshots (without frames, which are 2D and appear black, like in 2D over 3D case). Maybe two bugs, or maybe all this "who can paint visible or 'screenshotable' pixel" is related somehow. Thanks for all the patience. GSR

It just reports: > > ---8<--- > Level 1: No doublebuffering available. > --->8--- As the clipping problem doesn't seem to happen with XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1, my theory for it is that the affected apps pick up a depth 32 ARGB visual, which results in automatic compositing of the window, so it's the usual problem between the old DRI and Composite. > There is also a 2D app that causes black zones in similar fashion than > 3D ones (its pixels which are covered by others appear as black). I have been trying other things too, disabling Composite solves the
visual issues, but not screenshots. xcompmgr does not want to launch
and returns 1, of course.
My logs have been reporting for some time that both DRI and DRI2 are
being loaded, but at the same time it shows:
---8<---
(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable
--->8---
And xdpyinfo shows DRI2 and XFree86-DRI. A bit confusing.

I know, but no idea how that applies. To make it clear, the "weird 2D"
window is below the others. I can get screenshots of it if uncovered,
and I can get screenshots of other 2D windows. When a 2D window is
placed over the "funny" one, then the overlapping pixels appear black
in captures, while monitor shows the contents of all windows fine.
3D case is the same... it is like if some kind of "censor" went over
pixels looking for where 3D or the "weird 2D" are behind others and
set black the pixels delivered to the capture process. What I expected
is to see whatever is on top, thus preserving (or not) things that are
behind should not matter. See attached screenshot and mockup of what
it should show.

I'll get it fixed upstream. While your problem probably isn't directly related to this, XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 should serve as a workaround for it if it wasn't for this other problem. > My logs have been reporting for some time that both DRI and DRI2 are > being loaded, but at the same time it shows: > > ---8<--- > (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable > --->8--- > > And xdpyinfo shows DRI2 and XFree86-DRI. A bit confusing. These just mean the X server extensions are available, not that the drivers actually support DRI2. DRI2 support for the Radeon drivers is being worked on, but it'll probably be a while before it shows up in end user releases. > > > There is also a 2D app that causes black zones in similar fashion than > > > 3D ones (its pixels which are covered by others appear as black). > > > > That's expected, obscured parts of windows are not usually preserved in > > X11. > > I know, but no idea how that applies. Hmm, not sure what's going on then. However, the Mesa driver isn't involved for 2D windows, so this is probably a separate issue. -- Earthling Michel Dänzer | http://www.vmware.com Libre software enthusiast | Debian, X and DRI developer

Hi: Upgraded to 7.5-2 (via 7.5-1) and things changed to slightly better as I can enable Composite extension again without suffering visible overlapping issues, but still not perfect as screenshots still show black if a 2D app overlaps the 3D one. For the record, 7.5-1 made all screen black except the mouse cursor when a 3D app was focused, and back to normal when unfocused, showing all other windows and even the 3D content fine. Composite off "worked" as in 7.4, but seeing there was an update ready (7.5-2) I decided to try that one before reporing this "free screensaver" behaviour. I just noticed there is another update (7.5-3), I will test it soon. GSR

Hi, jcristau@debian.org (2009-11-06 at 1838.42 +0100): > What's the status of this bug? Updated and the DRI info now is: OpenGL vendor string: DRI R300 Project OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R300 (RV350 4152) 20090101 AGP 8x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE TCL OpenGL version string: 1.5 Mesa 7.6 Currently they do not redraw on top of other windows, but screen captures still cause problems (black zones for 2D apps over 3D apps, when using ImageMagick's import). Better, but still some issues. GSR
