Package: linux-image-2.6-amd64
Version: 2.6.26+17
Severity: important

Hello!

I'm trying to install Debian on a Dual quadcore nehalem box
(supermicro X8DTT-IBX/IBQ) with an Intel 82576 Gigabit ET Dual
Port Server Adapter (8086:10c9) nic.

Current kernels from kernel.org support this nic, Debian's
2.6.26-1 on lenny and squezze installation medium do not.

Manually loading ixgbe does not help either.

Sincerly,

Nico

Having the same issue. Looks like this NIC is not supported in the
upstream 2.6.26.. I'm attempting to build a modified 2.6.26 with the newer
'igb' driver now.

Attached a patch that updates igb in 2.6.26 to v1.3.19.3 from Intel's web
site. Built some kernels on it, works for me(tm). If anyone wants copies
of the kernel images, let me know..

Just as a quick note:

This also affects the HP ProLiant DL160 G6 series (http://bit.ly/tFJHI)

It would be great if the patch above could be integrated into the
official lenny kernel, and an updated version of debian-installer be
released.

Thanks for your work,
Lukas

This appears to have gone upstream in 2.6.27, so its first appearance
in debian would've been 2.6.28-1 (we skipped 2.6.27).

Thanks, this is some solution. I already use recompiled kernel packages
and there is no problem to add some patches, but dkms could be simpler
in some situation.

But still is a problem with debian-installer and i don't want to
recompile it. For new servers i use pxe netboot installer and on
machines with this card i must use installer from testing release. Of
course for easier installation there is no problem to install other
kernel with preseed/late_command or from local repo, but this card occur
in many new servers and i think Debian should support it in stable
release. This will be helpful for many people, untill we will see
squezee as stable, for me for sure :)

Best regards

The igb driver in stable currently supports these device:

#define E1000_DEV_ID_82575EB_COPPER           0x10A7
#define E1000_DEV_ID_82575EB_FIBER_SERDES     0x10A9
#define E1000_DEV_ID_82575GB_QUAD_COPPER      0x10D6

I obtained access to cards containing the first two chips[1] and did
some basic testing (discovery/dhcp/ssh connections). All ports worked
fine using both the current kernel in stable and with Ben's patch.

I don't see any changes in the patch that would affect the 82575GB_COPPER
that don't apply to the 82575EB_COPPER.

I'll have access to these cards for a while, so I can run any
additional tests upon request.

Ben: are you ok with me applying this to stable?
