Subject: udev: renames network devices after upgrade
Date: Sat, 28 Mar 2009 03:44:02 +0100
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: udev
Version: 0.140-1
Severity: important

Hello,

version 0.140-1 adds a redundant line to 70-persistent-net.rules
regarding my network interface. Before upgrading to 0.140-1 it
contained:
# PCI device 0x1969:0x1048 (atl1)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:1e:8c:cf:cf:ad", NAME="eth0"

After the upgrade the following entry got added:
# PCI device 0x1969:0x1048 (atl1)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:1e:8c:cf:cf:ad", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth1"

Obviously, the device is the same, the duplicate rule and the new
NAME-behaviour lead to my eth0 getting renamed to eth1.

regards
   Mario

Subject: Similar problem spoted

Hello,

I had a similar problem on a system here. It had a custom .rules file to
set fixed name of the interfaces (which was needed to solve the old
Schroedinger interface game in ?2007?). The problem was gone after I
renamed the custom file to be sorted after the 70-persistent-net.rules
in the lexiconographic sort order.

I think, the main reason for the confusion is the manpage: It tells you
long story about sort order, but it does not tell you which file is
prefered in that order. The first or the last one?

Regards,
Eduard.

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Hi,

i had some fun this morning, when no network device worked. My first thought
wasn't udev to blame, but the 2.6.29, because it has some code that can fsck
up the network.

Well, its udev and here are my observations.

First the original 70-persistent-net.rules, after udev 0.140 was started this
morning:

-------------
# PCI device 0x10de:0x0373 (forcedeth)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:17:31:8f:35:1d",
NAME="eth0"

# Firewire device 0011d80000ce1bda (ohci1394)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:11:d8:00:00:ce:1b:da",
NAME="eth2"

# PCI device 0x10de:0x0373 (forcedeth)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:17:31:8f:44:80",
NAME="eth1"

# USB device 0bda:8187 (rtl8187)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:15:af:04:c4:f6",
ATTR{type}=="1", NAME="wlan0"

# PCI device 0x10de:0x0373 (forcedeth)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="00:17:31:8f:35:1d", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*",
NAME="eth3"

# PCI device 0x10de:0x0373 (forcedeth)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="00:17:31:8f:44:80", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*",
NAME="eth4"
-------------

Now the interessting part, i moved the file away and restarted udev.
As expected the rules file was regenerated but have a look at the device
names:

-------------
# PCI device 0x10de:0x0373 (forcedeth)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="00:17:31:8f:35:1d", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*",
NAME="eth3"

# USB device 0x:0x (rtl8187)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="00:15:af:04:c4:f6", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="wlan*",
NAME="wlan0"

# PCI device 0x10de:0x0373 (forcedeth)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="00:17:31:8f:44:80", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*",
NAME="eth4"
-------------

They're still named eth3 and eth4.

Any idea why?

Best regards,
Matthias

G'day.

After an upgrade my network devices were also bumped up from eth0 and
wlan0 to eth1 and wlan1. The symptoms, and the history, are identical
to that of Matthias Heinz, in message #25[1].

Previously the system matched on the NIC address, afterwards on a good
many more features.

        Daniel

Hello all,

this is a mee too (to the original bug report).

The original /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules contained (only the relevant lines):
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:02:3f:99:29:19:59:0e", NAME="eth0"
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTRS{address}=="00:1b:38:c5:a8:8a", NAME="eth1"

Then after upgrading these lines were added:
# PCI device 0x8086:0x1049 (e1000e)
SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:1b:38:c5:a8:8a", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth2"

Note the ATTR{address} vs. ATTRS{address} here.

I added the line:
SUBSYSTEM=="net", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:1b:38:c5:a8:8a", NAME="eth1"
and commented out the eth2 related line and everything worked as before.

Hope this helps,
Michael

Hi, Marco.

I'm seeing exactly the same behavior here.

Attached is my 70-persistent-net.rules file. Notice the problem with
eth0 -> eth2.

Thanks, Rogério Brito.

I have 2 debian systems. On one eth1 became eth0 and on the other one
eth1 became eth2. So the change doesn't even follow an understandable
pattern.

Date: Mon, 30 Mar 2009 18:51:43 +0200
It seems that users of jaunty had experienced this bug as well:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/329106.

The Ubuntu maintainers claim to have fixed this in their 140-2 version:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/24341759/udev_140-1build1_140-2.diff.gz.

While I haven't tested it, the fix_persistent_net_rules function in
their postinst seems to be a good idea.

Disclaimer: I don't use Ubuntu at all.

Regards,
        Sven

   * On upgrade, replace instances of ATTRS{} in persistent-net.rules with
     ATTR{} otherwise they will not match anymore because now all *S{} keys
     must match the same kobject. (Closes: #521521)

Subject: how I fixed my network
Date: Mon, 6 Apr 2009 09:05:40 -0400
Upgrading to 0.140-2 was not sufficient to fix this problem for me.
I still had an old definition for "eth0" and a new definition for
"eth1" in my /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file even
after rebooting.

Morever, moving that file to /var/tmp/ and rebooting to let it be
regenerated also did not solve the problem -- it was regenerated
with "eth1" as the name instead of "eth0". So either there is
another file somewhere that stores persistent network interface names,
(though it's not obvious to me WHERE such a thing would be), or
the file was regenerated on the way down, instead of on the way up,
using "eth1" which was still present (albeit unconfigured) at the
time.

The only thing that worked for me was to actually edit the file, changing
"eth1" to "eth0", and reboot.

I had really, really been hoping to avoid that, because I'm reluctant
to edit configuration files for packages about which I don't care enough
to learn their innermost secrets, since that means I'll be spammed with
prompts by dpkg about whether I want to keep the old version or install
the package maintainer's version, forever and ever. Or at least until
a new version of Linux rewrites all the device handling for the (n+1)st
time and we scrap everything and replace it with something even more
complex and silly. Which seems to happen every few years.

Yes, you are supposed to fix the existing configuration by yourself.

Hard to believe.

severity 525516 critical
thanks

Same here. After first reboot the existing network setup was ignored
for the same reason, which, on a remotely-upgraded machine, would
require on-site intervention to make things work again - hence the
severity (and apt-listbugs will help people avoid this).

This looks the same as 521521, claimed fix in 0.140, but I'm running
0.141 here.
