Subject: RFP: pysolfc -- A Python solitaire game collection

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name    : pysolfc
* URL             : http://pysolfc.sourceforge.net/
* License         : GPL
  Programming Lang: Python
Description : A Python solitaire game collection

From WWW-site of that game:

"PySolFC is a collection of more than 1000 solitaire card games.
It is a fork of PySol Solitaire.

There are games that use the 52 card International Pattern deck,
games for the 78 card Tarock deck, eight and ten suit Ganjifa
games, Hanafuda games, Matrix games, Mahjongg games, and games
        for an original hexadecimal-based deck.

Its features include modern look and feel (uses Tile widget set),
multiple cardsets and tableau backgrounds, sound, unlimited undo,
player statistics, a hint system, demo games, a solitaire wizard,
support for user written plug-ins, an integrated HTML help browser,
        and lots of documentation."

Even original author of PySol recommends this fork:

http://www.pysol.org/

"As of 2008 any work on PySol has stopped, and PySol is officially
        discontinued.

Fortunately a number of enthusiastic people have continued from
where I left off and have created the PySol Fan Club edition.
Please contribute all your patches and enhancements to this new
        project."

Bernhard, please continue the process of adding pysolfc to debian. Is it
hard to find a sponsor?

When you do, be sure to also add a transitional package called pysol which
depends on the new one, to give a good upgrade path.

I'd hate for pysol{fc} to not be in debian anymore, it's a better
solitaire than any of the others.

Yes, that's precisely my problem; though I have to admit that I found
out about the Games Team's git repository very recently; I've just
finished adding pysolfc and pysolfc-cardsets to it. But I still don't
have any sponsor...

I'd sure do, but don't really know how. Can you give me any hints or
pointers?

Send an email to debian-mentors@lists.debian.org - or subscribe first:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/

Put

RFS: pysolfc (replacement for removed package: pysol)

in the subject.

You create an empty package, containing just the control file.

Package: pysol
Depends: pysolfc
Description: transitional package from pysol to pysolfc
Section: oldlibs
Package to ease upgrading from older pysol to new pysolfc.

This package can be purged once pysolfc has been installed.

One problem, I added

Replaces: pysol
Conflicts: pysol, pysol-cardsets

fields to pysolfc, which would somehow collide with that transitional
pysol. I've tentatively added (<< 2.0-1~) to those field entries, but
unfortunately, latest pysol versions were higher (e.g. 4.40-3) than
current pysolfc (which would be 2.0-1). How do I proceed?

Thanks for your help, it's very much appreciated!

Bernhard

Two choices:

1:

pysol and pysolfc don't have to be the same version.

pysol (the transitional) must have a version number greater than any that
have ever been uploaded. So use version 8.82.2.

Then for pysolfc do:

Replaces: pysol (<< 8.82.2)
Conflicts: pysol (<< 8.82.2), pysol-cardsets, pysol-sounds, pysol-sound-server

And include an empty, separate, package for pysol. (i.e. pysol should not
be part of the same source as pysolfc).

(Note the extra packages I added to the conflicts.)

Choice 2:

Use the epoch field of versions
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-controlfields.html#s-f-Version

i.e. pysolfc would be version 1:2.0-1 which is a higher version than
8.82.2.

Then do the rest as above, except pysol is part of the same package as
pysolfc.

I believe this is not as good since it's not really what epoch is meant
for.

So I suggest choice 1.

I guess, but they are all empty, or boilerplate.

I found an example package for you: kernel-patch-debianlogo

You can get standard boilerplate for rules from

/usr/share/debhelper/dh_make/debians/rules (although see the #name#
replaceable vars in it, it might be easier to run dh_make -n -s, and copy
the rules it makes).
