Subject: ITP: fudgit -- A double-precision multi-purpose fitting program

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name    : fudgit
  Version : 2.43-gudjon
Upstream Author : Jan Hendrik den Besten <besten@janhendrik.eu>
* URL             : http://www.bbphotonics.eu/fudgit
* License         : GPL
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : A double-precision multi-purpose fitting program

FUDGIT is a double-precision multi-purpose fitting program. It can
manipulate complete columns of numbers in the form of vector arithmetic.
FUDGIT is also an expression language interpreter understanding most of C
grammar except pointers. Morever, FUDGIT is a front end for any plotting
program supporting commands from stdin. It is a nice mathematical
complement to GNUPLOT, for example.

-- System Information:
Debian Release: 5.0
  APT prefers testing
  APT policy: (500, 'testing')
Architecture: amd64 (x86_64)

I like to add Fudgit again as an official package. It used to be in the
Debian release until a few years ago. I discussed this at
debian-science@lists.debian.org and got one reply: "Go for it."

I contacted Gudjon Gudjonsson, who updated Fudgit to the latest libraries:
http://195.198.146.229/debian/source/

He does not want to be the official maintainer and asked me instead. For
now, I copied his fudgit files to my own URL. Later I plan to make a
sourceforce project out of it.

Hi Jan,

this might be an interesting add on for Debian Science Viewing task.
Would you consider group maintenance in the Debian Science team?

Kind regards

     Andreas.

does this package offer any advantage over using octave? the
functionality seem to be a strict subset

Well, nobody is forcing you to join a team - you are perfectly free
to do so. But I feel some inconsitency in your reasoning: You do not
want the help of a team because you are not experienced? Especially
in this case I would recommend reading

   http://debian-science.alioth.debian.org/debian-science-policy.html

because it gives some reasonable framework and if it comes to seeking
a sponsor you are welcome to ask on debian-science@lists.debian.org.

Joining the Debian Science team means getting help in packaging scientific
software not adding another task to your shoulders. ;-)

Kind regards

       Andreas.

retitle 516627 RFP: fudgit -- A double-precision multi-purpose fitting program
noowner 516627
thanks

Hi,

This is an automatic email to change the status of fudgit back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 12 months.

If you are still interested in adopting fudgit, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

 retitle 516627 ITP: fudgit -- A double-precision multi-purpose fitting program
 owner 516627 !
 thanks

However, it is not recommended to keep ITP for a long time without acting on
the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from
packaging that software. It is also a good idea to document your progress on
this ITP from time to time, by mailing <516627@bugs.debian.org>.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,
