Subject: xinit: changes keyboard layout at gdm login screen suddenly
Date: Tue, 17 Feb 2009 10:43:10 +0100
Package: xinit
Version: 1.1.1-1
Severity: serious
Justification: breaks unrelated programs

Hi all,

I am not sure if this is the right package to report this error, but
after the big upgrade bunch after lenny release suddenly my gdm login
window has a different keyboard mapping (qwerty instead of qwertz).
That is not a fine surprise, especially since in my xorg.conf file it is
explicitely stated that I want German keyboard layout
Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier      "Generic Keyboard"
        Driver          "kbd"
        Option          "XkbRules"      "xorg"
        Option          "XkbModel"      "pc105"
        Option          "XkbLayout" "de"
        Option 		"XkbOptions" "lv3:ralt_switch"
EndSection

The xorg.log also tells me nothing, and from the list of updated
packages I can only suspect that it is xinit that does something to the
keyboard layout.

Please reassign if this is the wrong place, thanks.

It's not. If you're using gdm, you're not using xinit.

Good evening (GMT+1),

I have the same problem with a French keymap, but the problem is only with GDM
and "inside" GDM.

Although X.org is configured to use fr keymap, on the GDM screen the keymap is
set to qwerty. But after login in, the keymap is correct (at least with KDE 4
and GNOME). KDM has not this problem and the KDM login screen uses the correct
keymap.

Norbert, is it the same for you?

Yannick

Hello,

Same problem as Yannick after my last update : my xorg is configured to
use fr keymap but gdm's keymap is qwerty.
No pb with window manager (XFCE) or console screen (CTRL + ALT + F1).

Is it related to GDM or is it due to a configuration problem ?

Xavier

Hello,

for me this bug is present in KDM and GDM, but *not* XDM.

This applies to two independent installations (I tried all three ?DM on both):

- a Lenny stable, dist-upgraded first to testing, then to unstable
(but only *after* the unstable upgrade, performed on 2009-02-19)
- a Sidux 2009.01 *after* a first update (i.e. not after a fresh
install from the release disk).

This bug must have been introduced into unstable only recently, and is
not exactly specific to either GDM or KDM, but specific enough not to
affect XDM.

Attached is which packages a virgin Sidux 2009.01 would want to
dist-upgrade as of now.

Also attached are xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log, xdm.log, kdm.log and
gdm/:0.log from the dist-upgraded lenny (now unstable).

Hope this helps in narrowing down the search.

Greetings, M.Rampke

Hi,

the problem reported here is a bug of the libxi6 package.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=515976

You can solve it at the moment by simply downgrading libxi6 to the
version 1.1.4-1.

Hi all,

Are you sure this is not the new way of configuring xorg through hal?

In my case, I have added a file /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi
with the following contents for a French keymap:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <!-- -*- SGML -*- -->
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
  <device>
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keys">
      <merge key="input.xkb.layout" type="string">fr</merge>
      <merge key="input.xkb.variant" type="string">latin9</merge>
      <merge key="input.xkb.options" type="string">compose:lwin</merge>
    </match>
  </device>
</deviceinfo>

And it works - not sure however it was the same problem asi it is with
xorg from experimental.

In my case, and if I am right, it means that any pointer using mouse and
kbd drivers are ignored and evdev is used.

My xorg.conf file is now empty - yes, empty.

Cheers,
Julien

Subject: Another symptom

Hi,

I think this is a different manifestation of the same bug (and the
same remedy, downgrading to libxi6 from testing, works).

I have the keyboard switching applet enabled in KDE. When I try to use
it in the sid version to change the layout from my default (se
-variant dvorak), nothing happens (the flag in the applet changes, but
the layout stays the same).

Additionally, and weirdly, both global shortcuts and the "Run command"
dialog seem to use 'us' layout, no matter what.

	Sami

I just updated xorg on a sid box, and suffered from this
problem in gdm and gnome.

I created a file in /etc/hal/fdi/policy as suggested by Julien
Valroff to configure X, and this solved the problem.

hello,

i just encountered this problem after upgrading xorg in unstable as
well. i use the dvorak keyboard, but now gdm and x have switched to
qwerty by default. i have tried reverting to libxi6 1.1.4 from
testing, but that did not solve the problem. i also tried setting up
the following in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <!-- -*- SGML -*- -->
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
  <device>
    <match key="info.capabilities" containts="input.keys">
      <merge key="input.xkb.layout" type="string">us</merge>
      <merge key="input.xkb.variant" type="string">dvorak</merge>
      <merge key="input.xkb.options" type="string">compose:lwin</merge>
    </match>
  </device>
</deviceinfo>

but it did not make a difference. in the meantime, i've added
"setxkbmap dvorak" as one of my autostart apps, which is a partial
solution; however, non-optimal. thanks for any help anyone can provide
on this.

Just installed Debian 5.0.2 via netinstall CD, chose German language and
Keyboard layout in graphical installer. Console is correct, but both gdm
and gnome had US keyboard layout set. Gnome was easy to change, but I
did not manage to do that for gdm.

There seem to be gdm problems that are not related to libxi 1.2...

Your problem is unrelated to this bug. This is #535624.

   * Initialize extension with the right number of events. This should fix
     issues when libXi announces more events than the X server will actually
     send for that extension, and thus smashes Xlib's event vector (closes:
     #515734, #515946). Patch by Peter Hutterer, analysis by Nathan Kidd.
