Package: blobwars
Version: 1.08-dfsg-1
Severity: normal
The blobwars-data-nonfree mentioned in README.Debian never
seems to have materalised?
Also, blobwars complains "there is no soundcard" when I run it.
I thought perhaps it was using OSS, but aoss doesn't help,
and I see it's linked to ALSA. Of course, my laptop has
a sound card, with a typical ALSA driver. Left wondering if
this is some artifact of the sound support having been ripped
out?

Gah, I seem to have forgotten to upload it :( I will do so.

It should work fine without sounds. But is it only a warning you see or does
blobwars not start at all? In the latter case, could you do strace -eopen
blobwars and send me the output?

It's a warning, but for me, blobwars w/o sound is not very fun.

What happened to blobwars-data-nonfree? I saw it in NEW a few weeks
ago, but it's not in the archive AFAICS.

Roger

It was rejected due to missing license and/or copyright information for most of
the music and sound contained in the non-free data set. Therefore, it cannot be
distributed. I tried to search for this information myself, but although I
could find it for some of the files, it was only a tiny fraction. Even upstream
does not know it.
There are two options left:
1) either a blobwars-data-nonfree-installer package is created that downloads
and installs the music and sounds straight from the Parallel Realities website,
or
2) new, more-or-less freely licensed music and sounds is created from scratch
or downloaded from sites such as jamendo.com and ccmixter.org.
Personally I think option 2) is the best long term option, but I do not have
time at the moment to do that.

This does sound like a rather arduous task, and is a real shame because
blobwars is awesome!
Thanks for the update,
