Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request a new primary maintainer for the povray package because the
current maintainer hasn't been active for more than 2 years. I am
willing to help with sponsorship or comaintainance.

The package description is:
POV-Ray is a full-featured ray tracer. Ray tracers simulate objects
and light sources of the real world to calculate photorealistic, computer
generated images. Because of the nature of ray tracing, this process is
quite CPU-intensive, at the benefit of more realistic images compared to
real time rendering techniques. For example, in POV-Ray, you can model a
glass prism, and you will see a spectrum in the resulting image.
 .
POV-Ray by itself is a command-line utility that will take scene
descriptions, written in a special easy-to-understand language, to
produce ray-traced images (or even a sequence of images, for animations).
You can either write those scene-descriptions by hand, or use external
tools to generate (parts of) the scene.
 .
povray-includes is highly recommended in addition to this package.

Cheers,
Torsten

Hi,

I really interest for maintening Povray packages. I used it as a simple
user, 5 years ago.
I have good knowledge of 3D rendering, C++ and boost.

I look the bugs this week to check if I will be useful.

Cheers,
Philippe

I don't have much experience with it, but I always thought it was a very
nice program. I'd like to maintain it. How should I proceed in order to
do so?

Olá Rafael.

Take a look at http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/#l3 :

Removing entries

The procedures for closing these bugs are as follows:
O If you are going to adopt a package, retitle its bug to replace "O"
with "ITA", in order for other people to know the package is being adopted and
to prevent its automatic removal from the archive, and set yourself as the
owner of the bug. To actually adopt the package, upload it with your name in
its Maintainer: field, and put something like * New maintainer (Closes:
#bugnumber) in the changelog of the package in order to automatically close
this bug once the package has been installed; where bugnumber has to be
replaced with the corresponding bugreport number. Furthermore, before you
actually upload a new package with you as the maintainer, you should check if
there is a new upstream release and you should try to fix the outstanding
bugs.

If you have a doubt about any of these steps, don't hesitate to ask.

Good to see you're interested in Debian.

Até mais.

I'm sorry, but upon carefully reading of povray's license I decided that I can't
accept it. So I can't be the maintainer of this package :-(

Hi,

I would really regret the fact, if debian would come without povray. I have been raytracing
some things in former times and will take over the management of the package. Don't expect
everything to be resolved in a minute, but I will prepare an upload soon.

Regards,

Oliver

Hi Torsten,

I do not have any problems regarding the licence. But as you have had
a deeper look into the package, do you see any other things, that might be
difficult.

I plan to solve the bashism problems soon and remove the lintian warnings.
The next thing is to make povray available to the kfreebsd arch. Another
step might be to package povray 3.7.betaXX for experimental.

Regards,

Oliver

povray 3.7.x has recently been removed from experimental because its
license does not allow any redistribution.

Torsten

Has there been any discussion? I could not find anything on debian-devel. I am
(in general) unexerienced in license issues, but at the povray site it is mentioned, that 3.7 is
covered by the same license as 3.6. So what do you think, shouldn`t povray be
removed of the archive?

Anyway, if there is no chance to keep an "up-to-date" version in debian, I am not any
more interested in maintaining. The concept of povray is ancient and there is the blender
project, doing so much more. I have license issues with my own packages enough....

Best Regards,

Oliver

Hi,

My intention was to keep povray in the distribution, because I liked the software itself. But I
now have make the conclusion, that packaging it is not the thing I would like to do anymore.

* First: I didn't read the license as careful as Raphael. I really hate not to be able to package
the beta for experimental. (I had already started...)

* Second I have had a glance into the projects Mailings and Mailinglist and I dislike the spirit,
that is spread by the main developer(s). I do not see that any debian related task would get a help
of upstream.

That is my personal opinion and migt be wrong. But because of this I will give up in taking over
the packaging.

Sorry,

Oliver
