Subject: update-notifier: Is visible when running full-screen
Date: Fri, 13 Feb 2009 20:53:08 +0100
Package: update-notifier
Version: 0.70.7.debian-5
Severity: normal

I was running a game (torus-trooper) in fullscreen mode.
update-notifier suddently showed and covered most of the screen (given
the game low resolution). Naturally: game over :)

So it would be nice if update-notifier could avoid showing-up when the
user is running a full-screen application, game or video namely.

Are you talking about the popups sent through notification-daemon ?

If so, they are already hidden for fullscreen applications like totem.
It’s just that SDL doesn’t inhibit them properly.

Cheers,

Yes.

Is there an existing SDL bug about it, and do you have details on how
to properly fix this?

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in improving Debian, and sorry to keep the
bug unattended for so long. There's now an effort to review the open
bugs related with SDL packages.

I think that this is a duplicate of #544617 [1] that I tracked down yesterday.

torus-trooper is aborting for me, so I tried with rrootage (which
looks like a similar game, also using SDL, also with -fullscreen
option). Also I don't have update-notifier installed so I'm not
familiarised enough to try to reproduce the bug as reported. However,
I have a similar environment with KDE and the notification events
don't appear when the [different but SDL-based] rrootage game is in
fullscreen mode.

So I believe that it was fixed with the recent SDL upstream update,
because SDL implemented a way to tell the Window Manager to act in
fullscreen mode, and act accordingly (avoiding undesired behaviour of
the window in this mode, such as painting window borders and [I hope]
letting other windows get in the way). Please see more information in
the linked bug report.

Of course, please reopen the bug if you can still reproduce it with
newer SDL versions.

Regards.
